Ducks are really rude with their water, but they can’t use nipple waterers like chickens can. When we add chickens to the flock, I want to make sure they have clean water in my chicken tractor. I love the idea of a nipple waterer so they can’t contaminate the water.

Homemade watering chicken

This is a gratifying and fast project. I made two chicken tractors from 5 gallon buckets so I could get two chicken tractors.

Chicken Nipples (10 pk @ $12)
Drill with a drill that matches the recommended size for the nipples you purchase. Total cost per waterer: $13

If you have a marker, you can mark where you want the holes for the nipple. Remember that you don’t want the holes to be too high because all the water under those knobs is just extra weight and inaccessible to your guitar.I used 5 chicken knobs per bucket. This seemed to be enough for my chickens and I was able to make two buckets with my 10 pk. The chicken licks the metal pin, it pushes inside and the water comes out. Pretty smart and the chickens are quick to figure it out. You want the eyeballs of your nipples (teehee) and make sure they are all fully functional. Sometimes they get stuck on the opposite side, likewise you need to make sure to cut off the excess plastic on the drill to make sure it doesn’t block the metal pin inside the barrel.You will want to use a drill according to the recommendations in the instruction manual for chicken nipples. Our set claimed to use 5/16 or 11/32, but please double check in case the manufacturer changes that size!Your hole should look like this. Before inserting the teat, you need to make sure there is no excess plastic inside the bucket that could clog the watering pads. You’ll need to press hard at first, but as it catches a little, you want to gently screw it in. This should be TIGHT.I added 5 per bucket. Each nipple should be enough for 4 chicks so 5 nipples is enough for my flock of 18. Fill them with water and let them sit in the driveway on a sunny day. If it leaks, you will see wet spots around it. If you see any leaks, screw in more knobs. Some people use caulk for the inside of the bucket to help prevent leaks; this is NOT necessary for our waterers.Once you’ve confirmed it’s not leaking, pop the lid on and you’re ready to put it in with your chicken. I recommend keeping water and feeding OUTSIDE the coop. We have a running predator-proof chicken that is attached to our coop so food and water can stay outdoors. It helps keep bedding and barns clean. Overall, this works GREAT. I need to transport a 5-gallon bucket when moving the tractor, which is not ideal, but I don’t want to add the weight of the bucket to my tractor. The chicken has NO problem with access to the water, it doesn’t seem to leak, and if it does it’s just lying in the grass. My MAJOR complaint is that the chickens love to sit on it and of course… poop. So I have to wash my hair often. It is WAY better than leaving the top and risking drowning/watering.
