How To Make A Carmen Miranda Costume

I’ve been teasing this DIY Halloween costume quite a bit on Instagram, and most of you guessed it right: Carmen Miranda is it! (If you guessed Chiquita Banana totally counts. ????) The irony of this outfit is that if I took off my hat and crouched with one eyebrow, I’d be Frida all over again. I can’t seem to get rid of my favorite woman – LOL! Reading: how to make carmen miranda I’ve been so excited to make this myself for a while and it’s really an easy thing to put together especially now that I’ve done the research for you. I first experimented with Oh Happy Day’s DIY tutorials, which involve gluing fruit to a paper plate and securing it under your chin with string or elastic. But those grapes. Oh damn grapes. They just don’t stick together. Not to mention a strap under my chin doesn’t look very elegant – although it’s cute in baby form!I teamed up with my best gala retoucher, Becca Siegel, the only one, to take some goofy shots of a finished Carmen Miranda outfit in the wild. (Naturally, the wilderness is a street fruit stall in NYC.) Golden turban
Fake fruit
Glue gun + glue
Thin hoop earrings
Fruit plastic beads
Straight pins (optional)
Long skirt
T-shirt
Necklaces and bracelets piled up

Steps:

Start making your hat by stuffing a turban with bubble wrap, a t-shirt, or whatever other soft material you have on hand. This creates a turban shape and allows you to figure out how all the fruits will fit.

Plug in the glue gun and start playing with the fruits to find out how they will fit together to form a fruit mountain above your head, like a jigsaw puzzle. The best advice I can give is to see which pieces fit on top of your turban and keep stacking on top. Use your glue gun to secure the fruit to the turban and to each other everywhere the pieces touch. (Note: you will be using a LOT of glue.)

For any parts that don’t seem to want to stick together, you can hold them in place using straight pins. This is especially effective if your fruit is foamy. I had a lot of trouble with the grapes on my hat, as the slick surface of each grape kept coming off the glue. Straight pins, great fix.

For earrings, simply add the beads to the ring in the order you like!

Pair the outfit with a long skirt, blazer, multiple necklaces and bracelets, and a red lip. You can find a lot of Carmen Miranda outfit inspiration here on Pinterest!
