DIY Tutorial: Bowser / King Koopa Shells for Halloween Costumes | Creative motherI’ve researched a LOT of DIY Bowser case tutorials and pictures including this, this and this. I ended up developing my own after not finding what I was looking for. I’m not a high-end tailor and don’t want to invest a lot of time on some other type of case that is obviously needed. I have provided modifications if you are not a sewer person. I’m sorry I don’t have a lot of process photos, but that’s because I do this mostly at night. Hopefully the detailed snapshot will make it easy for you to see.

Step 1

DIY Tutorial: Bowser / King Koopa Shells for Halloween Costumes | Creative motherTo make a shell, first fill your backpack with soil. I recommend looking for a cheap backpack on clearance. It’s the perfect time of year for that — mine is a plain, $2 black backpack from Walmart. Make sure the belt is a uniform neutral color. You don’t want to cover your backpack first because it will expand when it’s full. Step 2

Next, I tackle the thorns. First, I cut out the orange circles. I cut seven because that’s what fits on a backpack. Adults can fit better or you can make them smaller.DIY Tutorial: Bowser / King Koopa Shells for Halloween Costumes | Creative motherI cut a circle out of the center of each circle to slide the cone through. I sealed the side with hot glue. Then I slide the cone in the circle and glue the white edge to the back of the circle. Then I glued a circle with orange spikes on top of the backpack.

Step 3

DIY Tutorial: Bowser / King Koopa Shells for Halloween Costumes | Creative motherNow, the hardest part about making this outfit is the white trim of the Bowser case – and it’s not that hard. I cut the felt to make a tube to go around the backpack. I sewed the seam inside out, but if you don’t have a sewing machine you can easily use the sewing method. Then I rotated the tube in the proper way, filled it with material, put one end inside the other, and sewed it closed. You can pin it if you don’t want to sew. Creating the spikes is a bit tedious, but overall it’s an easy project.
