But I’m here to tell you that doesn’t necessarily happen with backyard blacksmithing. Sure, you usually get what you pay for, but you can still have a lot of fun blacksmithing for the cheap. Here’s how I just set up a budget smithy for just $30.

Aside from hammer, fire, and steel, the two most important parts of the forging equation are the anvil and the forge. The broken anvil I’m using is a loan from my dad, although you can find yours at a scrap yard for as little as 20 cents a pound. As for the smithy, many people are only good at forging from car brake drums. Braid some legs to the sides, add an old crank forging blower and light it up. . For this experiment, I used a $5 Hibachi hamburger grill and some local ice that I know is fire safe. Make sure you get the stones from a dry location and test them in a campfire (when you’re at a distance) to make sure they don’t explode. NEVER use stones you collect by waterway (high explosion rate). For my forging blower, my daughter’s purple hair dryer works great. It even has variable speed! I glued it to a pipe that goes into a coupling that is attached to the bottom of the grill. And what burns this eye? I’m using the same fuel that the blacksmiths at the border used – hardwood charcoal. Yes, it burns quickly and it won’t overheat your metal. However, the price is right, the goods are available, and the stock is very clean.
