How To Light A Match…Yeah, We Really Wrote A Blog On That
Today is America’s Independence Day, a day usually associated with barbecues, bonfires, and fireworks – or bonfires in general. As I write, much of the West is on fire and counties across Colorado are enacting fire bans. For example, Boulder County has enacted a Phase 1 fire ban for the western mountainous region of the county, although fires are still allowed on private property and within fire limits. Following the American tradition of burgers and hot dogs, if you’re lighting a barbecue or bonfire with a match today, here are a few tips to beat it. Read: how to light a matchSound crazy? Am I serious? Tips on how to light a match? It’s ridiculous, except that it takes the average adult person nearly a dozen matches to light up a gas oven. That has been the lesson for decades. It was well-intentioned advice, but now we have a nation of commuting adults who can’t spark a panic match. And in my work, that’s simply unacceptable. They may not be expensive to buy (and blow through), but the value of a match isn’t in terms of money. I ask you to count them one by one.If you like making fires, you’ll want to check out ‘How to build the ultimate campfire in seconds’: How to build the ultimate campfire in seconds5 tips for lighting up the match
Lend some support to the Cheap-O branding! MegaSupermarket type matching is notoriously weak. The wooden part of a match is manufactured without regard to grain strength (or extensive quality control). Usually the matchstick will break when hit it. I want to hold the match at the bottom between my thumb and middle finger, and then support the end of the match with my index finger when I strike. Then I raise my stats when the match starts, safely but definitely still holding the match with my thumb and middle.
In which direction does the fire burn? Up. Fire flared up. So hold the match downwards, so that the flame can climb onto the matchstick. (Fire needs fuel to burn, after all.) Holding the match straight up makes it difficult to ignite, but turning it upside down can suffocate the match or burn it too quickly. I want to hold a match at a downward angle of about 45 degrees.
Take advantage of flares! When a match is ignited, the chemical on the tip of the match will explode. Most people hit a match and then review it to make sure it catches on fire. Why? You know what the game has to do. There’s no need to treat it as a mystery. If I’m on fire (i.e. twigs, leaves), I’ll get as close as I can before attacking. Then I attack down box, towards what I am illuminating. My stroke doesn’t end at the cell, but continues to the exact spot where I want the light to be. By the time the match first flared, my match was in place and I took advantage of the larger spark.
Wind (and even Air) can Fan… or extinguish! Windy days are some of the worst for wildfire risk (making fires grow significantly). But when it comes to a bit of a joint, the wind (or the force of the gas from the oven) can be the enemy. If it’s windy outside, wait for the wind to pause (which moves in cycles and usually stops every few minutes, even on cool windy days) before starting. If igniting a gas oven/stove, do not blow up a burning match with hurricane-strength gas. Gently turn the throttle as you move the match closer.
Naughty matches! Practice. That doesn’t mean sit down and pick up light matches. But when lighting a barbecue, campfire or whatever, try to use as few matches as possible. Don’t blow through a dozen lights that bake. Get it right the first time. Don’t use the whole box to make a campfire. Make it work with one. Help change our nation into one with adults who can light a match.
