How To Keep Natural Hair From Reverting
Video How to keep natural hair from turning grayLast night on Instagram (follow me!), a lovely reader asked me how I keep my hair from getting greasy. My answer would have me rushing to get my iPhone to reply back on IG so I decided to post one… lol.Read: how to keep natural hair from revertingQuick background I’ve been natural since 2010. Once I couldn’t handle two textures after converting only about 2 and a half months, I started wearing textiles. I was in between hair appointments and was dying to get my weaves out so I did it myself and then it was all “Might as well be big!” so i did… lol. I fiddled with that for a while before getting bored with my hair (in retrospect, I wish I’d experimented with haircuts at that stage more) and tried some other styles. Then I shaved one side of my hair after some really bad breakage. Then I planted it back (a lot easier than you think – see how I did it here). You can check out my little hairdo timeline here and all my hair related posts here. The salon I know these days all beauty treatments seem to be done by me, especially with natural hair, but I will always be a salon girl… lol. Even when I had my medium-sized bag, my best turning point was to visit my stylist, Gabrielle Corney. So I trust her to get my hair the way I love it (be it my weave or my own) and then I try to maintain it myself at home. going back to swimming lessons once a week for the next 6 weeks so my hair is constantly in need of something… lol. For the gym, I wrap a satin scarf and then put a hat over it. My heat-styled natural hair isn’t perfect but doing this at least allows me to keep some style.Swimming now. SIGH. Swimming is a rewarding experience and great exercise but the law can be a bit awkward when it comes to hair… lol. Before getting in the pool, I wet my hair with chlorine-free water and add a little conditioner before putting on my swim cap. This keeps my hair from absorbing too much of the harmful chlorinated water (hair has a certain saturation point so wetting it with “good” water keeps it from absorbing some of the “bad”) water. Once I get home (the shower at Y’s scares me so I only get home right after… lol) I wash my hair with the Malibu C Premium Swim Kit which contains a chlorine removal treatment plus shampoo and conditioner. It doesn’t make sense to do my hair while I’m learning to swim, so I find that having a weave that matches my natural hair texture (when inflated) is the best low maintenance for me. You can see what I wore to my last swim lesson here. I start by using shampoos and conditioners to smooth out frizzy and naturally curly hair. Some of my favorite sets include: Read more: how to factory reset lg stylo 5 without password Moroccanoil Smooth Collection You can see more curly to straight kits on the market here. I also love using Carol’s Daughter Monoi’s Shampoo, Mask and Leaves. After the gym or whenever my hair needs some reconditioning before washing it back, my heat styled natural hair loves a good conditioner. Rub a little into the hair and it works wonders for shine, vibrancy and style. My favorites include simple vitamin E ole oil (mine was even a generic one from CVS…lol), Caudalie Divine Oil, Carol’s Daughter Monoi Oil Serum and Ouidad Mongongo Oil.I also like a good dry shampoo to help restore old hair or if my hair is too oily. You can see why they work and some of my favorites here.To keep my edges “down”, I LOVE Tancho Tique Sticks. My hairstylist introduced it to me years ago when she used it on my hair to keep my hair looking shiny, especially the part that came out when I wore textiles. She taught me a little trick I still do at home when ironing my own hair: dab some Tancho Tique Stick in your hair before AND after passing the flat iron through. But only a little because if you use too much it can get greasy. But I swear to my Tancho Tique for keeping my hair fresh.Read more: How to remove mainsearchsignal Like heat tools, I get a lot of stuff sent to me for making this blog so I mostly just use what I submitted… lol. As for my flat iron, I LOVE my hot tool Cooler 1 ¼” air-conditioned flat iron as well as one I own by Jose Eber. When it comes to creating the big waves that I love, the Remington Curling Wand is my go-to. It’s easy — all you need to do is wrap small sections of hair around the iron (spinning, girl) and let it sit for a few seconds then release. I used to wear gloves at first because I was clumsy and um, ouch but now I’m much better at not burning my fingers. I use a curling iron from time to time but I need to get a smaller one and will probably get one from Hot Tools next. with a satin towel before going to bed. It helps keep my hair in place and also keeps my hair from drying out (hair likes fabrics like satin and silk – cotton and wool: not so much). I find that using a good hair smoothing system helps (I mentioned my favorites earlier in this post) and a good hairspray also helps (some products my favorites are Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray and L’Oreal Elnett — see more here). But if I need it somewhere and my hair needs to look good, I usually wear a hat or, if it’s winter, cover myself with an oversized scarf (with my satin scarf as a protective layer). wool and cotton) to help preserve my style. When all else fails, I have lots of printed beanie, hats and scarves to get me… lol. This one by Jemima Jackman got me through my entire trip to Grenada. This doesn’t mean I don’t have tons of pictures of my bad hair days floating around (because people play too much) — I don’t personally post them… lol. That’s it, I think… lol. Hopefully I didn’t miss a step… lol. If you have questions or would like additional ways to keep your heat-styled natural hair from reverting, leave them in the comments! Did you like this post?
