How to Install VHBL on Your PS Vita

  • You need a PS Vita (or PS TV) running firmware 3.60

    How and where to download homebrews for VHBL

    Long story short (but you should really Read below): This is the most complete PSP Homebrews database. There’s a lot of confusion here because installing homebrew with VHBL has evolved with versions: as Sony beefed up their security measures, it’s gotten harder and harder to install PSP Homebrews with VHBL, so you You will find conflicting information on this depending on the site you are viewing. With HENkaku you don’t need to do any of that. With HENkaku, you simply download the PSP homebrew of your choice on any PSP website (e.g. our database here) and copy it to the right folder of the PS Vita via FTP.     • Not all PSP homebrews run on VHBL: specifically homebrews that require kernel access don’t work on VHBL. Sometimes the kernel access requirement is explained in the homebrew readme, but generally it’s “tribal knowledge” of the scene.
      • Sometimes even homebrews that don’t require Kernel access refuse to work on VHBL for various reasons. It helps to try other versions of homebrew
    • If you have a choice between the “signed” version of your PSP homebrew and the “unsigned” version (or the “HBL version”), you need to download “unsigned”. (A good example here is Wagic which offers an “alternative unsigned version for HBL users” on its download page, which is the version you want to choose.)
    • In general, do not download the “VHBL packaged version” of a homebrew for use with VHBL on HENkaku. (I know, this is completely counter-intuitive). These versions are packaged in some complex zip format that is no longer needed. If you download these versions they will work on VHBL but you will have to unzip the file and potentially rename some things in it for it to work. Generally not worth the trouble but it’s up to you
      • If your homebrew software looks like some saved data with a topqa.info file in it, it’s probably a VHBL packaged file. You can unzip it somewhere and you will get your homebrew
      • In that case you’ll also probably have a file named topqa.info here that can be renamed topqa.info (Though I believe VHBL will also accept to run it if it’s named topqa. info)

    How to Install PSP Homebrews in VHBL with HENkaku

    Up to this point, I assume that:

  • you know how to use HENkaku, especially how to run moleculeShell’s FTP server and how to connect to your FTP server on Filezilla
  • You installed VHBL in your PS Vita and it gives you an error message telling you that you don’t have any homebrew installed in ms0:/PSP/VHBL/ vhbl_any_homebrew_error
  • You have downloaded PSP Homebrew according to the rules in the above and you want to install it in VHBL

    • So here it is:

  • run an FTP server on your PS Vita in molecule
  • connect to your PS Vita via FTP on your computer
  • in the FTP client go to ux0:/pspemu/PSP/. You will see folders named SAVEDATA, GAME etc, create a folder “VHBL” here, so you have ux0:/pspemu/PSP/VHBL
  • Navigate to ux0:/pspemu/PSP/VHBL in your FTP client
  • This is where you’ll want to clone your homebrew, in a subdirectory of the VHBL directory. For example, I would put Wagic in ux0:/pspemu/PSP/VHBL/WTH/henkaku_ftp_vhbl_psp_homebrew
  • All homebrews contain a topqa.info file. That file needs to be directly in the folder you just created. For example, in my case, Wagic’s topqa.info ends with ux0: /pspemu/PSP/VHBL/WTH/topqa.info when I copy the file. This is how you can tell, when you download homebrew, where to copy the files after you extract them from the archive. If your homebrew is zipped with lots of folders etc, just make sure you unzip it in such a way that topqa.info ends with ux0:/pspemu/PSP/VHBL/[Your folder name here]/EBOOT.PBP
  • Exit the molecule and run VHBL. You should now be able to navigate folders and launch your homebrew (by selecting its folder and pressing X or O).vhbl_running_wagic

    Note: In the past, PSP homebrews were usually located in the PSP/GAME directory. Sony added security measures to that particular folder on the Vita, which is why we are using “VHBL” instead of “GAME” here. Technically, that’s the only change from running homebrew on a classic PSP. In theory, you can use any folder name instead of “VHBL”, VHBL doesn’t care. Homebrews, however, can: some homebrews are hard-coded to use the PSP/GAME directory and may not want to run in the PSP/VHBL or other directories. You could try copying them in ux0:/pspemu/PSP/GAME and see how they work (e.g. can run but save nothing). Other homebrews like gPSP have a configuration file that allows you to tweak the directories it can use. Consider that before dismissing homebrew as dysfunctional, I hope this helps.
