There are direct trains available but if you find a connecting train via Zwolle, just get started. It will take about 90 minutes for the one-way journey. When you arrive at Steenwijk, exit the train station and go to the bus stop next door. Take the bus no. 70 & get off at Giethoorn village bus stop. This journey from Steenwijk to Giethoorn will take about 30 minutes. A one-way bus ticket will cost €4.00. If you are planning to travel by train in more European cities then I recommend using the Eurail Pass. Ideally, it shouldn’t take more than 2 hours to get to Giethoorn. It’s beautiful to drive as the road passes through some of the Netherlands’ most amazing views. Leave early to avoid traffic.

We rented a boat from ‘t Zwaantje Restaurant. It is located exactly in front of Giethoorn’s bus station. We paid €20 for an hour (max 4 people on 1 boat). This is definitely the best investment that day. ????We started driving in the canals of Giethoorn and got lost quite a few times because Google Maps couldn’t help us here. But we also get back to our route quickly because there are not many roads in Giethoorn.Giethoorn villageWe also visited Bovenwijde (one of the lakes in Giethoorn) which is very peaceful and beautiful. Whenever you go to Giethoorn, don’t miss the chance to rent a boat as you may not be able to steer your boat elsewhere.

2. Walking around Giethoorn

Giethoorn Street 1Boating is fun for 1-2 hours at best but what about after that? Giethoorn has beautiful walkways and too many beautiful bridges. There are many quaint restaurants and cafes in Giethoorn to choose from. Italian, American and Dutch dishes are widely available. We ate at this wonderful Italian restaurant called Ristorante Fratelli. Their pizza is very good.Waterside RestaurantYou can also choose to eat at one of the floating restaurants in Giethoorn. Dinner at one of these seaside restaurants will be quite romantic. The place we rented the boat was also a great cafe. Their prices are pretty decent and the coffee is of high quality.

5. Meet the locals

Local peopleDepending on the season, you might meet some of Giethoorn’s locals. We met a few of them while walking around. It is overwhelming to see such a peaceful village and its locals in the context of such a fast-paced world.

A few things to keep in mind

Walking around Giethoorn

  • Giethoorn is not a typical village for a day trip where you can see 10 things and do many activities. If you’re looking for that kind of place, Giethoorn is clearly not it.
  • In Giethoorn, the main attraction is the village. The tranquility all around, boating its canals & lounging its streets is enough to keep you hooked.
  • If you want to visit this Dutch paradise in the winter, make sure you have enough time in the day as the village is about 2 hours by car from Amsterdam.

Tourist trap warning

There is a clever tourist trap near the Steenwijk train station. As you are walking out of the station you will see a shop with a sign that sells train + bus tickets for €15 (one way), which is completely ridiculous. One-way bus tickets are only €4 and can be purchased from the driver. Depending on the size of your group, you can rent a boat in Giethoorn. €15 of tourist trap won’t get you any boats.
