How To Get The Wet Curly Look On Short Natural Hair

Wet Look became a major hair trend on social media in the first half of 2019, especially on YouTube. Lately, everyone with some kind of curl or wave hairstyle has tried it.

What is wet look?

In case you haven’t heard of it before, Wet Look is a hairstyle that looks wet when your hair is really dry. ) apply a generous amount of frizz – gel, mousse, conditioner – to your hair to smooth and weigh it, then blow dry in place to maintain a ‘wet and wavy’ look. with sparkles – think lounging by the pool in the sun, looking easy.

Even so, is Wet Look suitable for Hair Type 4?

At first, I thought this was only suitable for wavy or textured hair – so not for me! Although I have some curls and waves, the majority of my curls are of the kinky type. However, a video by Janae Mason inspired me to do it myself. Her curly hairstyle is similar to mine and her results are pretty good. She also provides a method and products that I think will work for me. I totally believe in having fun with my natural hair, so why not? Check out the video here to see my method and results:

My method

  • Starting with freshly washed and deeply moisturized hair, I worked in sections – without the small sections, this would be a complete failure! I also keep a spray bottle handy to keep my hair wet.

After smoothing this product over each part, I disassembled it with my Denman brush. Next, I use TWO gels – I need to take it seriously! First, Aunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Gel – to lengthen, what else? Then I use Mane Choice Pink Lemonade and Coconut Mousse to smooth my hair. In the end, I used one of my favorite edge controls from Creme of Nature for my hairline. Now, edge control is usually optional for me, but for this style it’s a must! 7. I covered my hair with two towels – one for the front of the hair and one for the length in the back – and air-dried it.

Here’s a little close-up of my hair after 2-3 days with scarf, gel, edge control and patience! A short video summary is available on my Instagram here. The full results can be viewed in this video.

What has the wet look taught me?

    1. Don’t be afraid to try new product combinations

I know what I’ll use the next time I try a sleek low bun or bun.

    2. Hair density problem

I have seen this hairstyle tried on many hair types and in my opinion the best results are on low density hair (regardless of texture or hairstyle). The hair is very thick and thick but not completely greasy. That’s not to say there’s nothing wrong with thick hair – it’s the absolute best for voluminous hairstyles – but it makes a big difference when it comes to getting a more balanced or droopy look.

    3. The hooded dryer is your friend

I don’t own a hair dryer with a hood and I wish I did. For one, this style has AGES let dry in the air. Even after a few days, the layers under my hair are still damp – not a good way for healthy hair or scalp! But I’ve also observed that the styling sets up much better with a more intense heat source, especially for us type 4s – locking the style in place before shrinkage starts!

    4. Tailor the method that works for you

For some, this style works just fine with three products instead of four, some used creams, some used hair bands, some used pins… Watching different people try on this style reminds me of how important it is to know your hair and change the method as needed. Styling curls, curls and curls is definitely not a one-of-a-kind deal! Each hair type or texture uses different tools and methods to get the same results.

    5. Your hair is unique – and that’s okay

For me, this is an interesting experiment. Although the style I ended up with didn’t quite achieve the look I wanted, I wouldn’t go down on myself or my hair because of it. We live in a world where hair is “let” be celebrated. While it’s exciting to see the versatility of what type 4 hair can do, I don’t mind that my hair doesn’t fall easily or don’t have the sought-after shine. There are things that type 4 hair can do with ease that no other hair type can do, and that’s a wonderful thing. I accept my hair for what it is: thick, textured, frizzy and beautiful.
