Black and white animals are always eye-catching, and the same goes for insects. Among them, the most notable is the “Four-toothed mason bee,” Monobia quadridens. This member of the family Vespidae, subfamily Eumeninae, is commonly seen in summer and fall in most of the eastern United States.Monobia quadridens’ common name is a bit confusing, and I’m not sure it’s “official.” It is also known as the “carpenter bee” and simply “the mason bee”. It has also been recorded in northern Mexico. Another species, Monobia texana, which exists in Arizona and Texas, adult wasps are most commonly seen on flowers like goldenrod and radical. Males are easily distinguished from females by large white spots on their faces (females have completely black faces). When not sipping nectar, the females are looking for nesting or hunting grounds for caterpillars. Most of the time they use abandoned tunnels originally caused by the Eastern Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa virginica. Check for such nests along the edge of your own roof. Monobia quadridens has also been observed to drive mason bees (Osmia sp.) out of wood burning, killing bee eggs, larvae and pupae in the process (Byers, 1972). Abandoned nests of the black and yellow mud Dauber can also be used by M. quadridens. In terms of the wasp’s large size, the caterpillars it hunts are quite small: Mainly leaf-eating caterpillars such as Sweetgum Leafroller, Sciota uvinella (family Pyralidae, subfamily Phycitinae); Macalla Dimorphic moth, Epipaschia superatalis and Maple Webworm Moth, Pococera asperatella (family Pyralidae: Epipaschiinae); grape leaves, primrose (Crambidae: Pyraustinae); Schlaeger fruit moth, Antaeotricha schlaegeri (Elachistidae: Stenomatinae); Psilocorsis sp. (Amphisbatidae); Platynota spp. (Turtle family); and unidentified moths of the family Gelechiidae. Each stung caterpillar is paralysed and flies back to the nest. Several caterpillars were tucked into the bottom of the nesting tunnel, and a single egg was laid there. The female then collects a ball of mud which she forms a veil that separates it. She will leave a small empty “room” between that tile and the next along the length of the tunnel, repeating the process for as many tiles as she can comfortably create. Once filled, the nest tunnel is sealed with a final layer of mud. Empty rooms, known as “intercellular cells,” are thought to mislead the parasites into thinking that no one is home. , and so on, with a final interleaved cell closest to the nesting site. This last empty cell is called the “vestibular cell”. In the nest, each egg takes about two days to hatch. The larvae then begin to consume the caterpillar’s fat. It takes an average of 4-8 days to finish eating before pupating. Wasp larvae do not spin cocoons, but secrete some sort of “oil” that they apply to the inner walls of their cells over the course of their three days. Each larva enters the dormant prepupa about five days after eating. About three days later, the larvae pupate (in summer generations; may overwinter later in the year). Ten to 21 days pass before an adult wasp emerges (again, for the summer generation). Males take less time to metamorphose than females. The adult wasp is born (emerges) then lingers inside its nest for another 2-3 days while its exoskeleton hardens and it can gnaw itself through the wall(s) prevent mud to free. Some misdirect themselves in the prepupa stage and are unable to return inside their cells when they emerge as adults. Others are victims of parasites.
