Indoor activities attract a number of plant-damaging fungi. Here’s how to identify these creatures and what can happen when infested.
-
- Cecid Fly – Under optimal conditions, this species of fly will multiply rapidly. Even worse, adult cecid flies are rarely seen since the larvae process spawn. As legless maggots, the larvae are white or orange and spread throughout the mushroom farm by attaching to tools and equipment. They feed on the mycelium, stalks and gills of mature fungi.
- Phorid Fly – As creamy white maggots, these insects will feed on the mycelium. In the early stages, they eat only selectively and are usually tolerable. However, once they turn into flies, they are capable of transmitting fungal and bacterial diseases through the plant. Adults are hunched and stocky. These flies are active even when “on land” – often erratic.
- Sciarid Fly – The most common pest for many growers, sciarid fly larvae are voracious, devouring mycelium and compost. After about 15 days of feeding, they enter the pupal stage by spinning a web around themselves. Adults are most visible around light sources and have a black body, long antennae and gray wings. Infestation by sciarid flies, also known as rodent beetles, dung flies or mushroom flies, causes the fungus to turn brown and skin-colored.
- Nematode – Often considered beneficial soil organisms, some nematodes actively feed on fungi found in mushroom farms. These microscopic organisms are usually detected by hyphae degradation. The presence of nematodes often indicates problems during cleaning and sterilization.
- Other flies – Several other species of flies may also be present in mushroom cultivation. To identify and process them, send samples to your local extension office or college farm program.
