Remember when I took the acrylic gesso out of the piece of wood that turned out to be chipboard? That is disappointing. But it taught me one thing: paint can be removed from some things. Yes, you read that right. So you did a paint job wrong? You don’t like that color as much as you think? Want to start over (or even just fix a mistake)? It is very easy. I will show you.
To remove paint from metal you will need:
- acetone (you can use nail polish remover, just make sure it says 100% acetone)
- rubbing alcohol
- lint-free rag
- gloves
You will NOT mix these. Please don’t do it.ETA: Also, I forgot to mention earlier, try to do this in a well ventilated area. If you can’t, then at least wear a ventilation mask (NOT a dust mask). Inhaling these chemicals in small amounts won’t do any harm, but if you’re exposed to them long-term, it can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, and increased heart rate. In rare cases, inhalation of acetone or absorption through the skin can cause acetone poisoning. Symptoms can vary from person to person. If you start experiencing any of the symptoms on the website I just linked, seek medical attention immediately. Children and pets will be affected more quickly than adults, so make sure to keep them away from the area until the smell clears. Remove acrylic paint from metal: Take a lint-free cloth and soak it in rubbing alcohol (not acetone). Squeeze out excess (you don’t want rubbing alcohol all over the place). Then just rub rubbing alcohol on the paint until it comes off. Removing spray paint from metal: Again, take your lint-free cloth and soak it in acetone (again, squeezing out excess acetone everywhere is worse than rubbing alcohol). Rub over the area you want to fix (or all of it, if you like) until the paint comes off. This is what I like to do if I accidentally get too close to where I’m spraying and the paint drips. I just pull that part out of the part I’m redoing and then spray again. Works all the time.What if I sealed the paint?: It depends on what you used to seal it. If it’s water-based paint (like acrylic paint), rubbing alcohol will loosen the sealant. If the sealant is oil-based (like spray paint), use acetone. Those are the two main paints and sealants you’ll see, so they’ll fit any project. Also, when painting the seal, remember to use the same base.Does this work on other materials?: I’m not entirely sure about that. I know it will work on fabric and pieces of wood, but you want to make sure to dry them thoroughly as soon as you’re done. Leaving the liquid there will destroy it. On clothes? I’m not sure.Can I reuse the sheets?: Not really. The paint will dry into the fabric and be difficult to use again. You can try hand washing after you’re done, but it won’t work very well. DO NOT put them in the washing machine. You really shouldn’t put clothes in the washing machine if they have paint on them (although I’m pretty guilty of doing this). But acetone and rubbing alcohol are very flammable. NEVER put soaked items in the washing machine and SPECIALLY do not put them in the dryer. Just make sure to use cloths that you don’t mind throwing away. To remove acetone, please follow these instructions. I’ve been using this method on several lamps lately.
