Fly to Manuel Antonio

Flying is one of the best ways to get to Manuel Antonio National Park. Planes are free of traffic jams, and you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Costa Rica’s mountains and coastline along the way. Best Driving Routes to Manuel Antonio from San Jose

In the early 2000s, driving to Manuel Antonio from San Jose meant a long, winding journey through narrow mountain roads. Along the way, you will cross single-lane bridges that cause traffic jams. The drive usually takes several hours. In 2010, the new Caldera Expressway (Road 27) opened, reducing driving time to the Pacific coast to about an hour. Although traffic is sometimes an issue (see below), Route 27 makes driving to Manuel Antonio a breeze.Important Note: Highway 27 is a toll highway. Tolls must be paid in the colonies of Costa Rica. There are three toll stations between San Jose and the Pacific coast. Together, they cost about ₡2,000 colones (about $4). How to Avoid Traffic on 27th Street Traffic is sometimes an issue on 27th Street. This is especially true when leaving San Jose on a Friday afternoon or returning to San Jose on Sunday afternoon. Gringos aren’t the only ones going to the beach. San Jose’s three million residents also love to drive to the coast on weekends. If possible, avoid route 27 on weekends and holidays.

Great things on the way to Manuel Antonio

Fruit and vegetable stalls There are many fruit and vegetable stalls along 27th Street. When you arrive in the small town of Orotina from San Jose, you’ll start to notice the ramshackle Fruterias (“Fruit Sellers”) on both sides of the road. If you like to snack on fresh fruit – or you’re planning to cook during your trip – then you should stop by here. Very great selection and very low prices. Restaurants A few kilometers along 27th street, near Coyolar’s small pueblo, there is a cluster of roadside restaurants. If you like ceviche, stop by Cevichera Gemelo, which offers fresh ceviche made with fish, shrimp or piangua (a small mollusk found in mangroves). Right next door is the restaurant La Cuadra Del Burro, which serves delicious homemade cornbread. Both restaurants are located directly across the street from “Futeria La Amistad.” Cold Coconut Water As you drive from San Jose to Manuel Antonio, you’ll see lots of hand-painted signs along the way advertising “Pipa Fria!” In Costa Rica, pipa fria means “cold coconut water”. Don’t miss your chance to drop by and buy a pipa fria. For less than a dollar, a coconut water vendor (coconut water seller) will chop off the top of the coconut with a machete, plug in a straw, and deliver it to the sun. Bed!Warning: Once you’ve tried fresh coconut water, bottled coconut water will never taste the same! Tarcoles River The muddy brown Tarcoles River is filled with crocodiles, which you can see from the Tarcoles Bridge along 34th Street (aka Costanera Sur). The bridge sits 6.8 miles (11 km) from the junction of 27th Street and 34th Street, making it difficult to spot the poorly marked Tarcoles bridge. Find Restaurante Los Cocodrilos and Restaurante Nambi, find a parking spot, then walk up the bridge. The only thing scarier than alligators – which can grow up to 15 feet (4.5 meters) – is the dilapidated bridge! More than a dozen crocodiles can often be seen at a time. Personally, the most I can count is 37!

Private shuttle to Manuel Antonio

A private shuttle is one of the best ways to get to Manuel Antonio. These comfort vans provide door-to-door service from the San Jose airport (or your San Jose hotel) to wherever you are staying in Manuel Antonio. The best vans even offer wifi. Personal transfers are also available between Manuel Antonio and many popular Costa Rican destinations, including Monteverde, Tamarindo and Arenal. The cost for a private car ride from San Jose to Manuel Antonio is about 55 USD per person. Public bus to Manuel Antonio

The Tracopa bus (2221-4214) runs between San José and Quepos throughout the day. Try to take a direct (“direct”) bus instead of a shared (“collective”) bus, which has many stops and is longer than two hours. The directo bus takes about 3.5 hours. Cost: ₡4,500 (about $9). Busracopa departs from San José to Manuel Antonio at 6:45 a.m., 6:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4:45 p.m. , 5pm, 6pm and 6:30pm. Busracopa departs from Manuel Antonio to San José at 4am, 4:05am, 6am, 7:30am, 9:30am, 10am, noon, 12:05am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 2:45pm, 3pm, 5pm and 5:30pm.

If you’re starting from San Jose, you can take an Uber to Manuel Antonio. A 3.5 hour drive costs about $150. That’s a lot, but it’s cheaper than a full-fledged taxi.
