The SAT, one of the most hated and dreaded exams for high school students, can feel unconquerable. For many aspiring young people, over 700 in math is a holy grail of grades: you hear it’s achievable but actually achieving it seems impossible. Dear friend: fear not! The holy grail has been found and there are specific steps that can be taken to help you get above 700 on the math section of the SAT. problem and get there, but for those who are really trying to SOLVE the math part of the SAT, you can’t skip the questions. This is especially true for difficult problems. The secret to difficult problems is to immediately forget that they are supposed to be difficult and just WORK. This doesn’t mean that you should assume the problem is easier than it is and choose an answer that is too simple, but it does mean that you have the skills to approach a problem and DO it! Solve the following problem that appears at the end of the SAT math section Reading: how to score 700 in sat math There is a rectangular prism made of 1 of the cubes wrapped in tin foil. There are exactly 128 blocks that don’t touch any tin foil on any of their sides. If the width of these 128 cubes is twice the length and twice the height, what is the measure of the width of the prism covered with foil? A) 6b) 8c) 9d) 101) Don’t give up before you start!I can feel your skin crawling out as fear hits, but believe in yourself! Let’s start working like we do with any other problem. This problem is finally there for a reason. You should have done everything else already, so all you need to focus on is this problem. Don’t worry about the time at this point. You will waste more time worrying than you have to. Start to work! And let’s start with what you know! Read more: How to silence a cat in heat2) Start with what you knowWe know: 1 in cubes is the same as cubic inches (volume in inches is basically a measure of how many 1in x 1in x 1in cubes can fit into a 3D shape). We also know that 128 cubes are completely covered by other cubes so that none of their faces touch the outside. This means that there is essentially a larger prism that completely covers a smaller prism. It’s like when you used to play with blocks (I know you did!) And you would place a block completely within other blocks to make an exact replica just bigger. So we have a rectangular prism measuring 128 inches. Finally, we also know that one side is twice as big as the other two.3) Draw a picture (if possible)Let’s try to draw what this looks like. If we had a cube measuring 2 x 2 inches, one side would look like this:
To cover it completely on all sides, we will have to have a cube with one more cube on each side. So the new face will look like this
So we basically know that the final shape will have sides larger than the two sides of the internal structure, (again, this will enclose a smaller rectangular prism). Huzzah! We are going somewhere.4) Use the general equation to get a specific answerRead more: how to turn off the flash instax mini 9 Using the equation of the rectangular prism and the information that the smaller prism has a length equal to twice the width and height, we can begin to write the equation: L x W x H = Area a Rectangular Prism Let’s make L = x That means H = x also has and W = 2x and we can plug it into our equation to get: (x) (2x) (x) = 160 or (2x ^ 3) = 128 —- > x = 45) ANSWER QUESTIONSWe are nearing the end, but we need to answer the question that is being asked. Now the length and height of the smaller prism is 4 in (that’s one answer choice) but that’s NOT what the question asked for. The width of our smaller prism is twice the length or 8 in. This is NOT what the question is about either! From the previous calculations, we know that all measures of the final figure are greater than the two smaller ones, so the size of the larger prism would have to be L = (x + 2), H = (x + 2) and W = ( 2x + 2). So our final answer is 2 (4) + 2 = 10. WE HAVE DO IT!! To score above 700 on the math section of the SAT, you don’t have to be a genius, you just have to believe you have the tools you need and then USE them!
