How To Dye Your Hair With Lipstick

A few weeks ago, a client of mine asked what lipstick I was wearing (MAC Russian Red, in case you were wondering). Being complimented on it makes me a little nervous because whenever I put on lipstick, I feel equally successful and intimidating. I wonder if I’m doing it right, or am I just like a 4-year-old with mom’s makeup on. I asked lovely Chrise Page Johnston from Beauty 360 for some tips and tricks and she kindly agreed. I’m sure most of you have a hand in this, but for the other members of Lipstick Noobs Anonymous, here’s a life-saving guide! How to choose the right color:Read: How to dye your hair with lipstick Color choice is important, as the right color will really complement your skin tone.red-lips-women-wallpaper

  • Choose lipstick with a matte finish. They are much denser and more pigmented.
  • If you have a darker skin tone, shades with a yellow tint will flatter your skin the most, while fairer skin types tend to go well with pink-based colors.
  • In other words, if you have a color you love and it matches, go for it!
  • The bright blue-based red is suitable for most women and also makes your teeth look whiter. Red lips are gorgeous and timeless, so if you think you can rock it, use it!
  • The red top looks gorgeous with a light raspberry color.
  • Dark brown can take anything away, but looks great with a deep red.
  • Similar to brunettes, blondes can go for almost any color, but pink really stands out next to light hair.

  • If you’re applying liquid foundation (concealer works, too) apply it right away. This creates an lash canvas to start with and gives you a cleaner, tighter lip line. It also helps prevent the lips from ‘bleeding’ and is more forgiving if you get a wound while applying it.
  • Use a lip liner. Find a primer of a similar color and start by lining your lips, then fill them in. That way, when the lipstick starts to fade, you still have a reliable liner underneath!
  • When liner, follow the natural lip line. Do not go beyond the beginning of the lips, especially at the corners of the mouth. It’s better to stay humble to avoid looking like a clown.

  • When applying lip liner, if you have slightly curved lips, you can make them look more symmetrical by overcompensating for the less plump side and less for the fuller side.
  • If you are prone to dry/cracked lips, apply a very small amount of lip balm about 10 minutes before you start applying lipstick. This will soften them a bit and make them easier to apply.
  • Use a brush, if possible. This gives you a defined line and a much superior finish.
