Prepare to create a sparkling cup
The first thing you need to do is apply the tape from top to bottom (if desired). Alumilite is FDA approved but I still don’t like my mouth on it so I put duct tape on top. Epoxy can also break if it falls hard on the bottom edge so something to think about. If I’m gluing on the bottom, I also add a press and seal so the paint doesn’t stick to the bottom. If you want to watch a video tutorial on how I glue the mug, click here. Turn the cup over in a well-ventilated area and spray the paint about 12 inches away. Just spin around it as you spray some dust on it. I know in my previous topcoat tutorials I said you have to use a specific brand of paint but for some reason I used two different ones and both worked. perfect. I don’t know if the stainless steel composition changed or because the paint is different from the enamel used to run for me, but not anymore!**Update** I now have a video tutorial on how i spray paint stainless steel tumblers, click here see!For my large sparkling mug, I used Walmart’s Krylon Satin Sea Glass spray paint. For my smaller blue glitter mug, I used rust-oleum spa blue.
Add Glitter to Tumbler

I put some Mod Podge in a separate bowl and used a flat brush to put it on. I “painted over” so that the entire cup was covered in a smooth, uniform layer. I use long brush strokes from top to bottom so that there are not many lines. I just opened the lid of the box and started pouring sparkles on the cup as I turned it around. Just keep pouring caribbean glitter over the cup as you move down its length until it is completely covered. Once it dries, usually after a few hours, you can tap it again to see if it’s still shiny. flax no. goes off. Then take a clean dry flat brush and swipe down all the glitter to remove any that aren’t glued down. You want a sealable epoxy finish on top of the sparkle, so leave a few millimeters of space. Repeat at the bottom if you deleted it before. Now you are ready for the fun part! Make sure you have a few hours that you can stay nearby. DIY Double Hand Cup Turner
At this point, you need to assemble a do-it-yourself turntable. So here’s my setup… super technical! I saw something similar online somewhere and modified to use whatever I have in the house. I started by punching two round holes in the side walls of the box with an awl. I have a long stick that we use to attach to the paint roller, so I slide it through and add noodles to each end. Then I wrap tissue or bubble wrap around the sponge until the glitter cup is fixed. making two glittery flippers with my double flip rotator I just put an extra stainless steel flipper on the other end to balance it out. Then add a wax paper underneath where your cup will spin because the epoxy is super sticky and will fall off! I think that’s why I got a few diagonal lines because the epoxy slid to the side a bit because it wasn’t flat. Football would probably be better for 30oz cups. For the second round of epoxy, I stuffed a lot more tissues in the cup and it helped.

I ordered extra measuring cups because they were so cheap (found here!). You will also need a plastic cup and gloves to measure equal amounts of solution A and B in two separate measuring cups. I usually use 15 ml per cup for smaller cups. Larger cups can use 20 ml per cup. Place both cups in the cup, making sure to scrape down the sides with a wooden stick to get everything out. I asked Alexa to turn on the timer for 3 minutes and sit down and stir. slow to medium speed. Bubbles when I see them with the stick. Put on your gloves and get ready to apply epoxy! Take a deep breath and watch the video…it’s not as hard as you think! For the blue mug, I used sparkles like the one shown below. And I did the epoxy a little differently. I actually mixed a bit of jumbo glitter and purple rainbow sparkle into the epoxy. I think I added a bit too much to the jumbo silver glitter but I still like the end result. Looks like it’s raining! There is another video of me applying epoxy with mixed glitter at the bottom of the post in the tag. It’s the same as the last video, but in case you want to see another one in action! As I said on the video you will have to keep an eye on the sparkling goblet and rotate it often if you are hand spinning!! For the first half hour, maybe once every 30 seconds to two minutes, it depends a lot on the temperature where you work. Warmer temperatures will dry faster. I watched the underside of my epoxy glitter goblet, and when I saw a drop begin to form, I rotated it 90 degrees to 180 degrees. Between turns, I like to take my bandages off after about 45 minutes to an hour. The first cup I ever made, I forgot to remove the tape for two hours and it ended up pulling up some edges making it jagged and some of the tape I couldn’t even remove! So now I reset Alexa for 50 minutes so I remember! Update: I’ve recently been immersed in the joys of sublimation printing! Check out my post on how to sublimate a tumbler without epoxy or putty!
