How To Draw Mammals

Mammals are fun subjects for sketching and painting. We feel a deep kinship with other mammals and seem to find something of ourselves in their eyes. Because they cannot fly (except bats), many species hide during the day, feeding at night. When you find a mammal in the wild, take advantage of this moment and draw a sketch. Don’t worry about making a good picture, try to learn something new. Learning to draw mammals opens new doors to observation and discovery. Understanding mammal anatomy is extremely helpful. Understand the skeleton and know a few of the most prominent muscles and how they manifest in the plumage. Once you have the body in place and the major muscle groups have been identified, you can get involved in drawing the plumage and other body details. Researching domestic animals is a great practice for wildlife exposure and is exciting in its own right.

These first lines are some of the most important in the drawing, but no one will see them. This is your chance to make sure your legs aren’t too short, your torso too long, your head too big, or too far away from your body. double and triple check these lines before you go into the details. A small edit at this stage in the drawing takes only a few seconds, but the drawing can be saved. I created step-by-step instructions on my approach to creating this initial structure for a deer and a bear. Study the instructions and the reasoning behind each line and the difference between the two. Then modify this approach to fit your own drawing style. You don’t necessarily have to take this approach exactly, but if you decide not to take one of these steps, be intentional and clear about your reasons. This process helps to ensure that you are testing important features and using a variety of drawing techniques to get a great result with little waste of time. This approach also incorporates the use of negative space, the most powerful and underused trick in the artist’s toolkit. Click here to enlarge the image.

How to draw feathers

Read more: how to reduce humidity in a grow tent I’ve prepared three blog tutorials with step-by-step instructions for drawing the fur of a bear (long-haired), mountain lion (medium-length), and deer (long-haired) short). These techniques demonstrate the technique with pencils and watercolor coatings. Here are some key points to remember.

  • Without drawing individual hairs, draw the stretch mark by showing the cracks between the hairs. The thicker and deeper the fur, the more prominent these cracks are. Many mammals have exceptionally deep fur behind the thighs, along the abdomen, and on the chest. Look for deep cracks in these areas.
  • Propose hairline cracks or fissures along the animal’s contour or edge by strategically placing outer-inward contours or “Bill Berry lines” where the contour suddenly changes angle or where hairs extend over a prominent bulge. Make a slight flick of the pencil, heavier on the outside and swipe inward. These are cracks not individual hairs, they are cracks in the hair. Avoid adding these along the contours of the body and don’t make them symmetrical either in size or distance. Always inconsistent.
  • Hints at the shapes of muscle underneath the coat with shadows and highlights. Notice how the highlight on the top edge of the vole adds more dimension.
  • If the coat is glossy like a horse’s, add sharp contrasting highlights.
