Sugar skulls are traditionally decorated skulls created to celebrate Día de Muertos — the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday. It is believed that on November 1 and 2, the spirits of the deceased will reunite with their loved ones. To celebrate, families create special altars in memory of deceased members and decorate them with flowers, candles, food, and small skulls decorated with sugar or clay — one skull for each loved one. An unofficial symbol of the holiday, and as such can be created by a variety of means – sculpting, drawing, painting and even used as a special adornment during the celebration. skull is simple and relaxing. How to draw a sugar skull

Step 1

First, you need some kind of skull template. It can be a photo of a real skull or a drawing. Please use the illustration from my How To Draw Skull tutorial. If you’re drawing digitally, just put it as a low opacity layer. If you are drawing in the traditional way, use a pencil to trace the skull on a new piece of paper. Make it very light so that you can erase these lines later.

Step 2

Draw the basic outline of your skull with ink or another dark tool. Sugar skulls tend to be heavily stylized, so feel free to modify the shape as part of your style.

Step 3

Thick borders are a good way to highlight a shape. Give the eye socket a flower-like edge, and outline the nose.

Step 5

Flowers are a very popular way to decorate a sugar skull! Let’s add some flowers later. Start with a circular center.

Step 6

To draw the petals in the usual way, first draw the outlines between them.

Step 7

Rotate slightly towards the center of the intended petal to outline its shape.

Step 8

“Close” the petals by adding a torn edge.

Step 9

Decorate the petals a bit.

Step 10

Add some shadows to create an attractive contrast.

Finally, erase/remove the guide lines of the skull and clean the lines. Even a simple decoration will look complicated if you add some variation in the thickness of the lines.
