I’m Pat Novak and have been double knitting on a loom for 15 years after designing and knitting with 2 needles for 5 years. We want to provide these articles with background, root information, to help you get started with more success.What is double knitting?You hear this term when looking at fabric, or in clothing – it’s called a double knit top. That is, the fabric is woven with 2 layers of yarn to help stretch and color fast. It is the same in double knitted garments; you create a fabric with 2 layers of yarn knitted together. Remember – it is knitted together, or interlocked. It can be bulky and thick, or thin and lacy. Interlocking is different from the knitted round tube. This is why you don’t get a knit side and a purl side for your knitting. The result is the same knit side on both the back and front creating a reversible fabric. So for the afghan or scarf it can be turned upside down and have the same two sides. This is especially beneficial when you’re adding color to the knitting. This will come later.
Begin your double knitting, which will require a loom with 2 rows of needles or pegs facing each other. The pins are usually placed directly opposite the other row. So you need 2 rails connected at the ends. The distance between the rails, determined by some type of spacer, keeps them in place. The distance between the rails determines the size of the stitches produced. For example, we are showing a KB 10″ knitting board. It has 2 rails, each with 24 pins placed directly opposite each other. Small wooden blocks between them are placed from 1cm – 3cm apart. They are held together by long bolts and wing nuts.
