I stopped everything else and just focused on getting my OAHS.But I’ve been practicing banana planting and other hand-balancing skills all my life. Even so, even if OAHS isn’t on the card for you right now, this experience has taught me a lot about myself and my approach to general training, and you can also learn a lot. thing from there. The first of Article One: Why are we talking about one-handed planting?

If you know anything about what we teach here at GMB, you know that we are teaching people the skills and attributes they need to be able to live and play without difficulty or limitations. OAHS is not. and rewarding skill to learn, but is it necessary for most people? Certainly not.So why are we talking about it? Two main reasons:
1. We all need to strive for something
No matter what level you’re starting from, having something to strive for will help you stay motivated in the long run. OAHS may not be what motivates you. Maybe your dream is to execute a plan, or a forward lever, or even just a gentle push – anything that floats your boat, has greater aspirations to help you. keep moving towards something. as a good motivation to work towards any goal you may have.
2. One Arm Handstand is a good example of a cycling goal

I had only one goal at the time, and I didn’t want anything else to get in my way. At the end of 14 weeks, I didn’t lose any of the other skills I trained before. I can still do chin lifts and muscle lifts on the rings, even without touching them for more than three months. This is a perfect example of what can be achieved when you cycle.
Some basic rules on how to do one-handed tree planting
Chasing OAHS isn’t for everyone, and if you don’t have a pretty solid banana tree to start with, it’s probably not the right goal to work toward right now (although once you do, it’s probably not the right goal to aim for right now). caught that banana plant, OAHS is a great target! See our banana growing guide for help). In this video, I show you some important details and tips to get you started on this journey. (If you’re looking to get into serious and more professionally oriented hand balance practice, I highly recommend checking out Yuval Ayalon, Yuri Marmerstein, Sammy Dinneen or any of the other talented hand balancers out there. ). like myself, you have no aspirations to become a circus performer or the like, there are many benefits to working on OAH. Here are some suggestions that I mentioned in the video to make your journey as successful as possible:
- Do not rush.
- Look between your index finger and thumb.
- Start facing the wall.
Obviously the physical benefits are sizable with OAHS, but the mental benefits can be even stronger. Going through this journey will teach you patience and persistence like some other skills. Let’s tackle this monster!
The process and posture of planting a banana tree with one hand
Your focus on positioning is extremely important to OAHS, and these little details made all the difference for me as I learned this skill. In conventional banana planting, body positioning is essential to success, but with OAHS, since you are balancing on such a small surface, if even part of this picture is off, you will not be able to perform the skill. So, as you practice the processes below, keep these positioning points in mind. Let’s look at each of these positioning points and progress in detail.
Put hand into

- Work on sturdy surfaces, so if you’re in a place with soft carpets or rugs, you can use a wooden cutting board (my preferred surface) or carpet tile (used in the video).
- Start with your hands relatively close together. If you can’t do the regular banana tree pose with your hands close together yet, go back and do it for a while before working with the OAHS.
- Your index fingers should be facing forward and your shoulders should rest on your hands.
- You will begin your OAHS work with your hand in this position. Jump into a regular banana tree position, then get into a standing position.
Weight change
This next step is important so that you get the feeling of shifting the weight to the side.
- The trend will change too suddenly, letting the shoulder pass the hand. Don’t do this! Push yourself down and across the floor, then shift the light weight to the side, keeping your shoulders in your hands.
- This is a very light weight transfer move and you can put a straight line from your hands to your hips.
- Go in one direction, back to the center, then go the other direction.
Side bend
This is where things start to get interesting ???? You’ll really start to feel like you’re working on that OAHS with this step.
- As usual, start in the banana tree position with your hands close together.
- Do the same light-weight transfer as we just did, but now begin to lower your hips toward that side.
- Be careful not to rush it. Remember that your shoulders should be above your hands, so the movement should come from your hips.
Tent
This step is probably the one you’ll do the longest, as you’ll slowly learn to balance your weight on one side.
- Instead of swinging your arms to the side (which will only throw you off balance), you’ll do weight transfers and side bends, then stretch your fingers.
- Start with all fingers, then two, then one, then, finally, bend your fingers so that your hand is just above the ground.
- For each progression, you’ll know you’re ready to move on to the next level when you’re no longer putting too much pressure through your fingers.
Extend your arms
This is the final step before full OAHS. Do not rush!
- Don’t pull your shoulders back, but extend at the elbows.
- Keep one finger in contact with the ground and think about rolling to the side, then back.
- Don’t-I repeat, don’t throw your arm aside. Slow down.
Planting banana trees with one hand
Moment of truth! This is what all your hard work has led to.
- Do all the steps we just mentioned:
- Start in a banana tree position with your hands close together.
- Shift your weight to the side.
- Drop your hips slightly to that side.
- Your finger, scroll through all the progress to make sure you’re ready today.
- Extend your arm with one finger on the ground.
- Finally: Continue rolling, extending arms further. Don’t pull your shoulders back or swing your arms to the side, but instead, move slowly and just continue the movement you made.
Use the wall
Walls are a great tool when you’re working with OAHS.
- Build the wall into a planter with your hands, then cross your legs.
- Watch through all the progressions on the wall: Shift weights, side bends, arm straightens, etc.
- Use the wall as a support base as you perfect your technique on each progression.
I recommend using the wall to practice as much as you can, then move away from the wall and reduce your exercise to a level. This will give you a good base for success.
How to have the greatest success with learning to grow plants with one hand
The best and fastest way to learn has always been to seek in-person coaching. That’s what I did when I decided to study OAHS, and it’s still what I advise most people, because the value of a great coach simply cannot be oversold. The guide provides steps that will help most people achieve this skill. Your best chance of success is consistent practice. There is no magic progression for OAHS or any skill. Consistent effort over time is what you need to build the skills you want. And that’s the most valuable lesson you can learn from the process. You have big goals and you know what you want.
