Second spring is here, I’m standing in front of my wardrobe, I’m sick of my clothes, if I ever see that shirt again, I’ll throw it away, but I don’t have money to buy new clothes, I FOR EVERYTHING I OWN. Also, the back of the package says you can dye your clothes in the washing machine, tub or kitchen sink. Nooooooooo. Don’t try any of these unless you’re already a skilled dyer, OK? You could leak dye all over the inside of your washing machine or turn your sink permanently orange if you’re a beginner. Start!You will need:
- One thing to dye: choose white, off-white, or beige clothing made from natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk, linen), natural fiber blends (such as cotton/linen blends), nylon, or rayon. RIT dyes do not work well on clothing made of 100% polyester, acrylic, leather, imitation leather or acetate. Dyed items that look especially good are: classic tights, underwear of any kind, canvas purses, cardigans, t-shirts, socks, most trousers and leggings.
- RIT dyes any color you love.
- A HUGE pot (like two gallons) that you don’t care about and can put nasty chemicals in (i.e. you won’t eat it all — ever).
- A spoon or chopsticks to stir
- white vinegar
- Salt
- Latex gloves — you don’t want to get this on your hands, or they’ll get an odd color for a long time.
- To prevent mess: tissue, sponge, and bowl for your stirring spoon.
So now that we have our material, let’s dye this elegant yet unpretentious purse that I found at a garage sale for a dollar!
Step one: Fill the pot ¾ full with water. Turn on your stove burner to medium heat.Step two: Check your item. What is this made of? If it’s made with a non-natural fabric (like nylon), add a cup of white vinegar. If it’s made of natural fibers, like this silk purse, add a cup of salt to the water.
