How To Disassemble A Mossberg 500

Welcome to the TFB Field Strip series. We will disassemble the Mossberg 500 in this edition. The field-strip procedure for the Mossberg 500 is very similar to the 505, 510, 535, 590, 835 models, as well as the Maverick 88 and 91 models. The only real meaning is whether your model has a take-down screw in place. on the barrel assembly or the removable cap at the end of the magazine. Before we begin, four gun safety rules are listed below for reminders.

  • All guns are always loaded.
  • Never let a muzzle cover anything you’re not willing to destroy.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until your line of sight is on the target.
  • Be sure of your goals and what is off-target.

The Mossberg User Manual can be found HERE.Step 1. Press the Action Release Button immediately after the guard activates and opens the action. Check the magazine and magazine to make sure they are unloaded. TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500Step 2. After making sure the weapon is safe, you can leave the action open. Unscrew the Release Screw (or magazine cap for similar models) at the end of the magazine. Undoing the screw will loosen the barrel assembly from the receiver. TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500Step 3. Remove the barrel assembly from the receiver. You may have to completely or partially close the action while doing this. You can use a puncher or a screwdriver. The back of the trigger guard can then be pulled down and out of the receiver.TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500Step 5. After the trigger group is removed, the Cartridge Breakers (red arrow) and the Cartridge Stop bars can be removed. Notice the red arrow pointing to the nub on the Interrupter. It fits into the hole on the right side of the receiver. The Toner Cartridge compartment is located on the left side of the receiver. TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500Step 6. Move the action backwards until the Bolt Slide aligns with the collector clearance cutout, marked in yellow. Once lined up, the Slide Bolt can be pulled out. The bolt is removed from the front of the collector, where the barrel is already. The bolt can be removed further down, though it’s fairly easy to clean without disassembling it completely. TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500Step 9. To remove the Cartridge Lift (marked in pink inside the receiver), pull it up from inside the receiver, then pinch the long arms together. The arms with the nubs are in exposed holes on the receiver (just above the trigger group holding hole seen in the photo above). TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500Step 10.Removing the Magazine Tube is not always necessary but you can do it for occasional cleaning. Be careful when you open the Magazine because the spring inside is under a little pressure. The follower will be loose so keep your hand close to the receiver.TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500TFB Field Strip: Mossberg 500Reassemble in reverse order and complete functional testing before storing your Mossberg 500.Read more: How to make a nail cross necklace
