How To Cure Speedball Screen Printing Ink
Last week, I shared a tutorial explaining how to heat Speedball Fabric Ink with the Easy Press 2 from Cricut. Many of you ask if there is another way to heat the ink to make the ink last longer and washable. While I’ve heard of various ways to heat the ink, I wanted to test them out before making any recommendations. What better way than to do a little heat setting test of my own!

To start this test, I screen-printed the same design on 6 tea towels with Speedball black fabric ink. After letting them all dry overnight, I used a different heat setting method for each towel. Keep reading to find out how each method is maintained after a few washes.
Result
The “before” picture shows the ink drying – before the towels are washed. The word “after” shows the same towel – after it has been washed twice.
1: Heat press machine
Heat presses are one of my favorite crafting tools. After HTV many years, now I use heat press machine in a different way, which is silk screen printing ink heat press. I like to use a heat press because I can put my entire design under heat. This means a single press of 40 seconds and I’m ready to hit my next item. That’s it… it’s washable now. 2: Press Easy 2
If you are a fan of Cricut, you probably have the Easy Press 2. This is a great way to heat press shirts. I have 2 different sizes – the smaller size is suitable for smaller projects or pocket designs and the larger size Easy Press 2 is perfect for large designs. Repeat the process (if needed) until you have applied heat to your entire design. That’s it… it’s washable now. 3: Basic household iron
Not ready to invest in a Heat Press or Easy Press 2? You can start screen printing with a basic household iron. If your iron doesn’t cover your entire design, you’ll need to move your iron around the design to make sure every part is heated. Cover the design with parchment and iron the entire design for 3-5 minutes, moving the iron continuously. 4: Dryer
I’ve always heard that you can set the heat in the dryer but I didn’t try it until this test. This seemed like a convenient method if you were making a lot of shirts, so I wanted to give it a try. Dry timer for 40 minutes. After heating the towel in the dryer for a 40-minute cycle, I did a test wash .❌ RESULTS: After washing the towel once, I noticed color fading. After the second wash, it fades significantly. I believe this method can work for longer time in dyeing machine. However, 40+ minutes in the dryer didn’t seem very practical to me so I didn’t try this test again. If you’re going to try this method, you definitely want to preheat the dryer for longer than 40 minutes.
5: Kitchen Oven
This may sound strange and might not be very practical if you’re making a lot of shirts, but you can heat your project in the oven. I put the towel on a cookie sheet lined with parchment to keep the towel from touching the bottom of the oven and burning. 6: Heat gun
I bought a heat gun to speed up the drying of the ink when using my screen printer. I want to experiment to see if I can heat the ink with a heat gun. If you look closely, you’ll see some faint burn marks on the white material around the “near 2005” part of the design. This can be prevented by holding the heat gun a little further from the material and moving it constantly (like a hair dryer). about 4-5 inches from the material. Be careful not to leave the heat gun in one spot for too long or it will burn your materials!
