The first step in any type of project where you plan to cut something is to try it out and mark where you want the border when you cut it. So that’s exactly what I did. I make a mark on the front of the center indicating where I want to cut the hoodie.Next, take off your hoodie and get ready to start DIY! I use a ruler to measure the distance from the border to my marker in the center of the front. Then I marked two marks the same distance on either side of the bag. This is because I want my marks to still be there when I pocket.Next, seam tear off the top and sides of the bag. Try to be careful not to make any holes in the pocket or hoodie as you do this! The bottom of the bag is sandwiched between the hem and the body of the hoodie – so I didn’t tear the bottom. The bag will remain attached to the hemline when you do this. Then, cut the bottom edge of the bag away from the tendon. This will result in some cutting off the bottom edge of the bag. But that’s okay – the bag is still big enough! Now let’s cut the hoodie! You can set the bag aside for later use and toss the frame (or save it for another project). Grab your ruler and draw a line around the hoodie, going through the two points you made earlier.Next, grab your scissors and cut the hoodie by cutting the bottom of the hoodie about 1/2 inch below the line you drew. I leave this 1/2 inch for the seam allowance when I finish the hem.Now let’s put that bag back on. I found the center front of the hoodie and marked it with a pin along the raw edge. Then I found the center of the bottom edge of the bag and marked it with a pin. Then place the pin in the center of the shirt with the pin in the center of the pocket. Pin the entire bottom edge of the bag to the bottom edge of the hoodie. And secure it with a long straight stitch, 1/4 inch from the raw edges.Next, pin the sides and top edge of the pocket to the front of the hoodie. Sew the pocket to the hoodie following the original stitches – so I sewed two rows of stitching along the top and sides of the bag. Make sure you leave the angled openings alone! They need to be open for you to use the bag. After sewing the pocket to the hoodie, the last step is to turn the bottom 1/2 inch and sew it in place. You can use a regular straight stitch because the hoodie is just loose enough that it doesn’t need to be stretched.Once your hoodie is hemmed, you’re done!Read more: How to tie a karate belt If you enjoyed this DIY tutorial and want more DIY and sewing tips, tricks, and projects – I’d love to have you sign up for my email newsletter!
