How To Cook A Shoulder Picnic Ham
Grilled picnic ham (pork shoulder ham) is one of my favorite cooking hams. Although this is a cut of pork that is different from traditional ham, it generally tastes the same because it has been treated and smoked in the same way as the ham. In the end, it tastes great and makes a great cold cut to serve the family. I cook ham quite often, especially during the cold months of the year when I don’t mind turning on the oven for the delicious treats of the day. Buying full-sized ham is a lot to serve my family, so a picnic ham is ideal! Whenever I see smoked picnic pork thighs for sale, I grab one or two and throw them in the freezer.Smoked picnic ham is the perfect size for my family. Usually weighing around 5-8 pounds, these hams usually provide my family with 5, two full meals and then I love having the bones to cook up a pot of soup in my Instant Pot or slow cooker!!Place the picnic ham in the baking dish. I use my large ceramic lasagna baking dish. It’s the perfect size for ham. Make sure you put it down, fat facing up. If there are cheesecloth or anything else in the package, remove them so that only the ham is in the baking dish. Place 3/4 cup of water in a baking dish.
How to cook picnic cold meat
Cover the roasting pan with foil. Bake ham in 350F oven for 1 hour. This loosens the fat and allows the peel to be pulled out easily.After baking for 1 hour, remove the ham from the oven and remove the foil. Peel the ham and discard. The case will get hot, so I used tongs. If you want, you can trim some of the fat off the fat cap, but I usually leave most of the fat on the ham.Using a sharp knife, cut the slits in a cross-check shape. Make sure to go deep enough that you can cut not only the fat, but the meat as well.I pureed yeast in a blender until smooth. Then I brush all over the ham, using a BBQ brush to make sure the glaze sticks properly to the crevices of the ham. I don’t pour all the yeast over the ham. Instead, I initially beat about 1/3 of the glaze before baking the ham. Then twice, during baking, I’ll brush a little more glaze all over the top of the ham. This gives that ham a wonderful caramel glaze all over the top and sides of the ham. The taste is great!Read more: Causes Meteorological Mayhem Bake the ham for 2 more hours. After 1 hour, brush the ham with a glossier glaze. About 30 minutes later, brush the ham with the glaze again. Bake the ham for the remaining 30 minutes.I let the ham rest for about 5-10 minutes after I take it out of the oven. Then, use a long, fine carving knife to carve into slices of ham about 1/4 inch thick. I like to serve my ham with some dijon or creole mustard. Amazing!
