  • Crayons
  • Fine black brush. I use a Micron Brush pen.
  • Pen or black stomach pen. I used the Pitt Artist Brush Pen.

A note before we begin. I draw straight into my art journal, which is a light textured mixed media paper. This means that the final drawing has a clear texture. If you want it to look completely smooth, you can draw on a separate sheet of paper and then paste it into your art journal. For ultra-fine papers, you’re looking for drawing paper with a “vellum” finish. However, I also like how the texture finish looks. It all depends on personal preference.Sunset Art Journal Colored Pencils Page 3Start by placing a large piece of scratch paper behind your page to protect the rest of the diary in case your color gets off the page. Now every drawing you do of the landscape will need a horizon line. I wanted most of the focus in the drawing to be on the sunset, so I lightly drew a horizon line with a black pencil at the bottom of the page, about a quarter of the way up. Start by taking a light yellow pencil and draw a half circle just above the horizon line and color it. Use a pale peach pencil to outline this shape on top and use a bright yellow to blend the two colors together.Sunset Art Journal Colored Pencils Page 4We’ll start adding color layers, blending each layer a bit with the previous one. I used bright orange, medium orange and red orange. Remember to be gentle with your hands as you can always add more color but it will be harder to erase. Now add some plum color, spreading out to the edges of the page. Read more: how to chase bees in the chimneySunset Art Journal Colored Pencils Page 5Let’s add in some clouds. Take a medium pink shade and draw some small clouds in the sky. Next, take your plum shade and add some to the top of the clouds, and some light pink to the bottom of the clouds. I also added some peaches coming out of the bottom and sides.Sunset Art Journal Colored Pencils Page 6Next, I took a medium blue and an indigo blue and colored around the clouds, filling in the rest of the page.Sunset Art Journal crayons Page 7This is one of my magic tricks to blend crayons and create a soft pastel look for the whole thing. Take your white pencil. You then. Single-color pencils that you never use. Start coloring the entire sunset with a white pencil, start with yellow and color your way up with darker colors. Don’t be afraid to press hard and smear the color around a bit.Sunset Art Journal Colored Pencils Page 8Here I just made the right side of the page to show you the difference between the original sketch and the side that has been blended with a white pencil.Sunset Art Journal Colored Pencils Page 9This is what it looks like when it is fully blended. If you’re working on smooth rather than textured paper, the finished blend will look much smoother. If you have trouble making the black solid, you can color in pencils and markers to make it darker. For this you will need a brush pen. I like a super thin brush pen, because they are great for creating different thick and thin jagged lines as branches are formed. Just like in the picture, you will hold our brush pen almost straight up and down, and keep your wrist off the page. This allows your hand to move freely and also uses your natural swing to create tree branches. If you’re nervous about this part, go ahead and practice creating branches on a piece of scrap paper.Sunset Crayons | Art magazine pageI made a tree on the side of the page, but wanted to show you step by step how to create this big tree in the middle of the page. Once you learn how to make a tree, the rest will be easy. Start by drawing two straight lines away from the horizon, curving inward. From there, draw three to five large branches that end in points. Fill it all with solid black. Remove large branches, draw 3-5 medium branches, use pen wiggle to create serrated lines. You want these branches to be thicker at the base and thinner at the end. You can always thicken them up a bit if needed. Now let’s start drawing small branches growing out in different directions. Some are longer, some are shorter. The transformation is what makes the drawing tree look real.Sunset Art Journal Colored Pencils Page 12You can clearly see the changing branches here, and the brush is the key to drawing trees like this with ease.Sunset Art Journal Crayons Page 13Here is the finished tree! It actually draws more attention to the sunset and creates the whole scene. You can even add a little bird flying in the sky or perching on one of the branches if you wantSunset Crayons | Art magazine pageAnd we’re all done! What I love most about the art of journaling is the ability to use so many different styles of art in one place. I hope you enjoyed making this crayon sunset art diary page and I can’t wait to see what you create! Read more: how to become an overnight mermaid
