Try gently rubbing an emery board, fine sandpaper, or a dry/just damp white “magic” sponge to remove ink stains from suede. Those white “magic” sponges are actually made with micro-abrasives that work to remove stains and stains. These “magic” sponges can also remove paint/dyes/colors, so be careful and always test the test spot first! If the roughness of the sandpaper doesn’t remove the ink from your suede piece, you can always try using a toothbrush dipped in water with a little white vinegar. Make sure you have cotton balls handy to dab stains and vinegar on while you’re working. Scratches, Nicks and Divots These days, permanent markers come in a variety of shades and sizes so it’s easy to color match your item with a leather scratch. If it’s a small scratch and you’re not confident in your ability to “color” the scratch — buy a fine-line permanent marker that’s close in color to the skin you’re trying to fill in. Test an area on a conspicuous spot to make sure your leather or leatherette doesn’t interact negatively with the permanent marker. You can also find duct tape in a variety of colors and patterns to patch holes or larger scratches.

Leather is the natural leather of (usually) cow and is very porous, prone to drying and cracking. Just like applying lotion to your hands in winter, leather wallets and shoes need moisture replenishment due to exposure to the elements. The skin part of the item is clean. Then take a dry rag to dry. A thin layer of Vaseline can work on extremely dry and chapped skin. Big box stores also sell restorative products and combination balms that come as a lotion. Use a clean rag once a month, or when leather shows signs of wear (dry skin, almost no shine). Always be sure to check a spot on an inconspicuous area of the leather you are working with. There are some types of leather and imitation leather that cannot condition the leather. They are commonly used in purses and shoes (such as nubeck, cowhide or suede). If your savings have any tags attached or sewn to the item, check to see if you can use leather cleaner.
