You may notice small scratches on the faux leather and a few pen marks on the inside of the lining: fear not! There are several simple techniques and tricks for leather and leatherette restoration. And most of the products we will be using for recovery that you probably already have at home! The MarksMarker and pen line is one of the most common “disadvantages” to find. Especially the inside of a wallet! There are several ways to remove pen stains. You may have to use a combination to remove particularly deep pen marks. Spray or dip a small end into hairspray until saturated but quick to work. Try to gently blot away the ink. You can also use rubbing alcohol if the hairspray doesn’t work. Rubbing can smear and move the stain further from the spot you’re working on. Using a cotton ball or pointed tip to dot will work great. Just keep using the new cotton swab and tip every time you see some ink transfer to the cotton pad/tip until you lift the stain out. Polishing remover and brake fluid are two other possibilities for removing ink stains. Try gently rubbing an emery board, fine sandpaper, or a dry/just damp white “magic” sponge to remove ink stains from suede. Those white “magic” sponges are actually made with micro-abrasives that work to remove stains and stains. These “magic” sponges can also remove paint/dyes/colors, so be careful and always test the test spot first! If the roughness of the sandpaper doesn’t remove the ink from your suede piece, you can always try using a toothbrush dipped in water with a little white vinegar. Test an area on a conspicuous spot to make sure your leather or leatherette doesn’t interact negatively with the permanent marker.
