The gear box takes power from your transmission and divides it between the front and rear wheels. Some transfer cases are selectable, meaning you can choose between two- and four-wheel drive, while others offer full-time all-wheel drive. Some gearshifts offer low gear range, which is an additional downshift to increase torque to the wheels, at the expense of vehicle speed. This is displayed as “Low 4WD” on most vehicles. Some gearshifts can vary the amount of torque delivered to the front or rear, while others split the torque evenly all the time. called a power breaker, or PTU.
What is case shifting?
Your transfer case is filled with fluid that lubricates and cools the internal components. In some gearshift cases, the fluid also supplies lubrication to the wet clutch, which is used to change how much power is transmitted to the front or rear wheels. Most transmissions are filled with automatic transmission fluid, which is usually red. Others use a thicker gear oil, and some use a specialized fluid specifically made for that gear shift.

- Extreme pressure (EP) additives protect against wear. These additives can eventually react with water that forms inside the case due to condensation, forming acids that can damage seals and other components.
- Detergent works to trap dirt and debris, suspending so dirt cannot cause scratches or abrasion. Eventually, the detergent in the liquid becomes “full” and cannot hold any more material.
- Corrosion inhibitors prevent rust and oxidation inside the housing. These additives also become less effective as they age.
- Antifoam agents prevent the oil from foaming as the gears rotate through it. These chemicals are extremely important, as foaming oils have air bubbles in them, which weaken the vital fluid barrier between components.
- The friction modifier helps to prolong the life of the clutch.
Replacing a transfer case can cost anywhere from $1500 to $5000, depending on the vehicle type. The best way to protect this expensive component is to perform regular replacement of the liquid of the fairly inexpensive switch box.
How often should the fluid be changed in case of an infusion?
When to replace the fluid in your transmission varies widely from vehicle to vehicle. Some vehicles require transfer service every 25,000 km, while others need not care until 100,000 km or more. We generally recommend that you follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended maintenance intervals, which can be found in your owner’s manual. We’d be happy to look this up for you too! There are some rare instances where we recommend replacing your transfer case fluid before the manufacturer’s warranty period, such as a “lifetime” transfer box fluid. This fluid doesn’t last forever, and “lifetime” usually means the life of the transfer case, and certainly not the life of the vehicle!

The liquid is usually drained out by removing the drain plug, then reinstalling the drain plug. Then, on most displacement cases, the liquid is filled up to a certain level by removing the filler cap. Both types of plugs typically contain a magnet to collect metal chips and others, and they are cleaned in the process. In these cases, we use a special pump to fill the transfer box. Some transfers do not have a drain plug, as they are “lubricated for life” and are not meant to be serviced. This was an idea that didn’t work well, as many of these units failed before reaching 200,000 km. To extend the life of our customer’s “no service” shifting cases, we have had good success using a special tool to suck out the old fluid instead.
