How To Build A Mounting Block For Horses
How to DIY a mounting block
I’m so happy to be able to get back to my DIY projects. And this project is what I’ve been wanting to do ever since. I say that a lot, don’t I? I guess that means I always have new ideas in mind for something that I want to see if I can build. And even though I’m not a professional carpenter, I love making things Read: how to make a mount for a horse And then I can cut ideas with you! And this mounting block is one of those ideas. I’ve got a step stool. But it is a bit too short. Or my legs are a bit too short for my tall horses. So I decided to spend the afternoon building a wooden mounting block. If you want, you can also use it as a stool. But the main purpose of this piece of furniture is to make it easier for me to get into the saddle. And all the wood that I used for this project was scraps of wood that I saved from previous projects. .
What you will need
To create a mount like this, you’ll need a few things.
- 1″ x 6″ pine board
- 2″ x 4″ pine board
- 1″ x 2″ feather strip
- 2 1/4 screws
- Caulk rubber painter
- Sandpaper
- Sanders
- Paint
- 18 volt drill with screw head
Not really much. And like I said, all of this wood is scrap. I left it lying around and decided to create a mount block. The 2 x 4s were cut into 16 inches long, and then I cut 2 12 inch pieces of wood. The rest of the wood I cut is all 20 inches long. So to create this mounting block you will need the following pieces of lumber:
- 2″ x 4″ x 16″ (6 pieces)
- 2″ x 4″ x 12″ (2 pcs)
- 1″ x 2″ x 20″ (2 pieces)
- 1″ x 6″ x 20″ (6 pieces)
And that’s it. There isn’t much real wood for this project, so you just need to assemble the pieces together. First, you will make the edges using all 6 16″ 2 x 4 pieces of wood. Each side will take 3 pieces.Read more: Acrylic paint on leather: How to paint and seal leatherRead more: Acrylic paint on leather: How to paint and seal leather Then take one of the 12 inch 2 x 4 pieces of wood and attach it to the long front of the pre-assembled 2 x 4 side. And repeat the process on the other side.Adding a small 2 x 4 piece adds stability to your mounting block and gives you more surface area to screw down the 1 x 6 inch board. Then, attach a 1 x 2 x 20 size to the remaining open area of the top step. By adding this bottom piece, it will make your mount block much more stable as you climb up the top step. Read more: Acrylic paint on leather: How to paint and seal leatherSee? This little mount can support my weight and it’s stable. So I don’t have to worry that it will move around when I’m climbing into the saddle. For me, it’s important to have rounded and smooth edges, so I always sand all sharp corners, just in case.Once you’ve got all the texture, you can give it a more seamless look by filling in all the seams and screw holes. I like to use the caulk of the DAP rubber painter. It is easy to use and clean with soap and water. It also helps protect your new mounting block from the elements if it will live outside. It is very affordable and it will protect the mounting block from the weather. Kilz 2 is safe to use indoors and outdoors. If you want, you can paint a different finish on top, but I’m happy with just the mounting block. So two coats of primer is enough for me. But if you want to paint it with a stable color or your favorite color, choose it!
