So please, don’t email me accusing me of saying this is “my” idea. Back in the Halloween time, I had someone email me saying their kids were going to be pirates for Halloween and wanted to know how to get some beads on their hair for their costumes. I did a little research and found some online videos somewhere that I recommended to her. I’ll credit it if I can remember where it is – but it’s been months so I’m sorry. After working on my Valentine’s Heart bead project, I recalled the whole beading thing and thought it would be interesting to put on my blog to add in the beads part of everything. Either way – this is something that I know is common in the African-American hair world (I think they can do some absolutely amazing things with their kids’ hair that I never knew existed). can now do it on my daughter’s hair!) They have so much more than tricks and tools for this, but here’s the cheat I found and it worked for me, because so this is it. I wanted to post this back near the V day post when I mentioned more fun with beads, but Goose wanted me to wait and post it the week of her birthday (wahoo – she’s about to be 7) because here is one of her favorites. I think it will be difficult to use beads with holes smaller than these, but if you are more talented you can make it work! I just don’t – so I’m stuck with this particle size.** Sorry for all the blurry photos – my camera had a mind of its own when I took these pictures! ** Once you’ve twisted the tin foil, start threading the beads onto the hair shaft. Fit as much as you can or want.Once you have covered the beads on the tin foil, make sure you leave enough room at the end…… Because you will need to bend the end of the tin foil up and glue it back into the hole of the bottom bead.Sorry, it’s all a bit blurry. But it’s like you need to make a little “ball” with tin foil so the beads are at the ends of the hair. The beads just float on top of the tin foil at the bottom of it all. Does that make sense?By doing it with foil, I think it’s like having a little silver bead at the bottom of each of them. And yes, the white ish beads are a different color than the ones in the middle. We think she has more pearl-like beads than she does, so it’s not quite a perfect fit but oh well! We also mixed up a bit and put less beads on the outer 2 helices and I put the beads in a different order to make it interesting.This is the final look. She really likes it.And for hours after that it kept bugging me that we weren’t doing anything around the base of the ponytail so we rushed and threaded some more beads into some pipe cleaners and wrapped them around the base of the ponytail. It doesn’t completely cover her elastic, but it does add a bit of color and I think it looks pretty interesting.Anyway, that’s the trick I used to get the beads. I know there are special clips or pins that can be used to hang on the bottom of the hair, as well as threading tools to tie the hair up to the beads (similar to a very small tail) but for for my purposes tin foil works great and it’s pretty quick and painless! I thought this would be something fun to do in the summer full of braids and beads. Hope you can try this.Oh, and I almost forgot.
