How To Attach Leather Straps To Bag

Let me just say, I know there’s a LOT more that I can do with those leather handles, including sealing them, stamping them, and finishing the edges. I didn’t do any of that, the idea was just a simple handle. Leather will change color with time and use but I really like that. Read: How to attach a leather strap to a bag You will need:

The leather strap is long enough to make 2 handles (see the belt section of the leather goods store)
Awl or Cropadile to punch holes in the skin
Rivets are the same size as the width of your leather band
hammer
Scrap of plastic tarpaulin

The first thing you need to do is strengthen the point where the handle attaches to the wallet. To do this, I use a plastic canvas. If you’re sewing the March Bag pattern, you’ll want to complete the entire bag but make no handles. You will then skip the last step of hand-stitching down the bag lining.Read more: How to Shrink Leather Wallet – Step-by-Step Guide Once you’ve marked where you want the handle on the bag, thread the plastic tarp into the bag lining and pin it in place (It hasn’t been sewn down yet so you can do this easily).After you’ve cut the leather to the desired length (buy some scissors at a leather goods store to cut the strap, don’t ruin your good sewing scissors), punch 2 holes in the top of the strap. You will penetrate all layers of fabric and plastic tarpaulin.Then line the holes in the bag straps with the holes in the straps and attach the studs. Use a hammer and the instructions on the package to set up your studs. Too easy isn’t it? This is my first time using leather and I’m excited to learn more about working with it.
