How To Recondition A Laptop Battery

Laptop batteries are expensive devices, so if you have an old laptop that still works fine, who wants to shell out over $100 for a battery replacement right?! Fortunately, there are many ways, some techniques, some interesting and some weird ones, that people have come up with to restore a dying battery on a laptop. In this article, I will try to list all the different ways. I’ve read about and if I can remember where I read it, I’ll link back to the source. Method 1 – Freezing method

I once watched a movie where a guy’s phone was dying, so he took the battery out and got some snow on it, which seemed to make it last longer! I still don’t know if that’s true, but it looks like you could freeze a laptop battery and get more juice out. Here is the very brief process:Step 1: Take out your battery and place it in a sealed Ziploc or plastic bag.Step 2: Go ahead and put the bag in your freezer and leave it there for about 12 hours. Some people suggest leaving it on longer, but I wouldn’t leave it on for more than 24 hours.Step 3: After you take it out, remove the plastic bag and let the battery warm up until it reaches room temperature. Be sure to wrap it in a towel and wipe off the condensate as it warms up.Step 4: Reinsert the laptop battery and charge it fully.Step 5: Once charged, unplug the power and let the battery drain. Now repeat steps 4 and 5 at least 4 times: charge to full then discharge completely. That should be it! Unless your battery is leaking acid, you will experience some bumps during battery life.Note that you should only do this on NiCD or NiMH batteries. If you try this on a lithium battery, it will make the life of the battery worse. Unfortunately, there is no way to restore the lithium battery. Method 2 – Cool down your computer

If you have a lithium ion-based battery, you can increase its life by making sure your laptop stays cool. If your laptop overheats, it can damage the battery and cause reduced battery life. I have an old Sony VAIO laptop and I have seen a significant increase in the laptop’s battery life when I purchased the laptop cooling pad on Amazon. You can buy one like this for $20.You might think your battery is on the last pin, but it could simply be that it gets too warm and thus charges faster.

Method 3 – Recalibrate your battery

With most newer batteries this is no longer necessary, but if your battery is dying, it’s probably a pretty old battery. In that case you might benefit from a recalibration. Battery recalibration is done because sometimes the operating system can’t figure out how much capacity is left in the battery. This can happen if the laptop is always plugged in or if the battery is never dead. says you have 35 minutes of battery left but the computer will die sooner or later. A lot of manufacturers have released calibration tools for specific laptop models, so do a Google search for your calculator model + battery calibration first. This is an example tool from Sony. If you have to manually recalibrate the battery, the process is pretty straightforward:Step 1: Charge your battery to 100% or to whatever percentage max it can reach and leave it there for about 2 hours to cool down. You can let the battery drain until the laptop dies, or you can put it to sleep or hibernate around 3 to 5%. Either way, you want to make sure the screen stays on until it dies or goes to sleep.Step 3: Leave the computer in shutdown mode for 3 to 5 hours.Step 4: Turn it back on and let it charge to 100%. Method 4 – Remove the battery when plugged in

If you have a laptop with a removable battery, you can try to remove the battery while you plug it into the wall. You may have to check this as some laptops do not function properly with the battery removed. However, if the laptop is running fine and is always connected to a power source, removing the battery can simply remove the battery. can increase the life of the battery. Because the battery is cool and doesn’t get hot when plugged in, you’ll get more use out of it. Of course, you need to make sure you don’t live in a blackout area because your computer will die instantly and you will lose any data. This method is also time consuming and annoying and something most people won’t do. The last method below might be the best.

Method 5 – Unplug when battery is full

The last option you can try is to let the battery charge to 100% and then simply unplug the computer. When it’s almost dead, i.e. less than 5% left, keep it plugged in and let it charge. However, this can reduce battery life on newer lithium ion batteries, so for those batteries you should only let the battery level drop to 35% to 45% and then charge it back up to 75% to 45%. 85%.
