How To Determine Recurve Bow String Length

As a professional bowstring builder, I’ve seen one of the most misunderstood things in archery is how to measure the bowstring for a repeatable bow. This article explains what industry standards are and why they apply. During the development of archery, it was soon realized that there must be some sort of standard so that everyone would follow the same instructions on how to measure the bowstring. and crossbows have caused some of these older AMO standards to be forgotten in the process. However, with traditional archery still as popular as ever, like using a 66-inch periodic bow, it is important for shooters and retailers to understand how to determine the correct bowstring length. How to measure a supply chain The correct way to measure a traditional chord (or any chord for that matter) is:

Place it on ¼” pins at 100 lbs tension for 20 second intervals.

Measure from the outside of the pin to the outside of the pin.

I can understand the confusion, but this is why the industry standard of 100 lbs tension is so important. Each bowstring material on the market has slightly different characteristics. One of these things is how long it will last. Measuring every string at the standard 100 lbs compensates for different tension ratios and allows everyone to measure in exactly the same way, from 55 to 66 inch periodic arcs and beyond. For example, a Dacron bowstring may measure up to 1 inch shorter when hand-tightened than to its correct tension, while newer material such as 8125 may differ by only an inch. AMO standard and how to measure chords based on chord length The AMO specification states that a long bow or bow must be properly braced with a bowstring 3” (less than 100 lbs tension) shorter than the AMO length of that bowstring. Most traditional arcs will be labeled around the shank area with AMO lengths. A lot of times, people see bows marked 68” and assume that is the length of the string when in fact it is the length of the bow. If your arc or arc is not marked with AMO length, measure your arc to find its length. Do like that:

Lie face down.

Measure from the chord groove to the chord groove, across the curve of the chord.

Do not go down to the bow grip but follow the natural line or belly of the bow.

This measure is the AMO length of the arc. Now, don’t forget to shorten it by a 3″ paragraph. For example, a 66-inch long periodic arc would have a 63″ string. This usually means that the archer (bowmaker) has marked the bow for a specific length so that the exact string length will be used. For example, let’s say you have an arc that measures 57″ but is marked as “58AMO”. This bow will require 55″ wire to achieve the correct bracket height (remember, 3″ shorter). This is why it is important that you learn how to correctly measure the bowstring yourself or contact the bow manufacturer when it is time to place a new order. Most bowstring manufacturers will be able to compensate 100 lbs for tension if you let them know your measured length with the tension arm.Buy custom bowstring 60X As with everything in archery, there are exceptions to the general principles, but the methods above will work most of the time, including for a 66-inch periodic bow.
