Basic Knit Doll In 6 Sizes
These designs are created with beginner knitters in mind. They are knitted flat and sewn together. For a more experienced knitter, I created directions for knitting the dolls in a circle, using a double pointed needle, thus eliminating the seams. Also, tutorial to add a face and hair. Here are general instructions for making knitting dolls. Over time we will be sharing various projects starting with this basic doll pattern. Directions are for 6 sizes. First, there are directions for the four larger dolls: child 5 ″ 8” child 10” mom 12” dad Then there is another set of directions to create: 4” baby 3” dolly Stitching: You can choose to knit: the bodies and arms into a garter stitch (knit each row) or a stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row). The stitch creates horizontal lines and creates a flatter surface.
The stock stitch produces vertical lines and a smoother surface.
Just like clothing, the horizontal stitches of the stitch tend to make the doll look fuller, while the neck stitch, with its vertical lines, makes the doll look slimmer. It’s all a matter of choice. ALL SIDES must be knitted with a woven stitch. I prefer to use 100% wool because it is easier to play with than acrylic which tends to shine up over time. Because the dolls will be played with children, they will need to be cleaned from time to time. The wool will soften and shrink but I’ve found that if you stuff the dolls with acrylic yarn instead of yarn, they won’t come off and will stay in shape. I found that I could wash a doll with my normal wash (cold wash, rinse cold) and even tumble dry when warm, with minimal shrinkage. Note: The neck stitch will fray and shrink a little more than the fabric stitch.IMPORTANT: Leave long yarn tails (12 – 18 ″ depending on doll size) when you mold or when you cut yarn. These will be used to sew the doll.INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOLL DOLL, BABY, MOTHER AND KIDSInstructions are written for the 5″ doll. Additional sizes in parentheses are as follows: 5″ (8″, 10″, 12″) Legs 1: Cast loosely on 10 (15, 20, 25) stitches. sew.Work in a garter seam or a stockinette seam for 10 (16, 20, 26) rows.Do not tie but cut yarn.
Foot 2: Slide the first foot back of the needle and loose tape over 10 (15, 20, 25) stitches. Finish as you did for the first leg but DO NOT cut the yarn.
Full body: Slide your feet together. You should now have 20 (30, 40, 50) stitches.
Knit in rows, treating 2 separate legs as one. This will create the body. 
Continue working on your pattern for 16 (24, 32, 40) rows.

DO NOT bind off. Cut. Thread the end through the yarn needle. Slide the needles through each stitch as you remove them from the knitting needles. It will then be pulled tight to gather the stitches.
Sew Dolls Together: Thread one end of yarn to the bottom of one leg and sew a thread that runs close to the bottom of one leg.
Pull the thread tightly, gathering the foot edge. Tie but do not cut the yarn.
With the right sides together, sew the hems together. Tie the end of this yarn with the end of the yarn at the crotch. DO NOT CUT THIS FIBER. Weave the end of the yarn that you used to sew inseam and topqa.info the same for the rest of the leg.
Use the yarn tail at the bottom of the pants to sew the back body up. Tie it with a suitable yarn tail where the body makes contact with the head. Weave at the end of this yarn and clip. Lengthen the end of the remaining body yarn.
Using the top yarn tail at the base of the neck, sew the back of the head up. Tie this yarn and weave at the tail and clip. Turn the right side of the doll outward. Use a needle to thread the remaining long end of the yarn at the neckline from the inside to the outside of the doll. This will be used later to create the header.
Tuck the doll.
Pull the yarn tail at the top of the threaded end through the stitches. By pulling it tightly, you will get the top of the doll’s head. The knitting head should not be wrinkled. If you have wrinkles around the top of your head, try stuffing a little more. When satisfied, tie it off. Note: On larger dolls, you can make a “hole” in the top of the head. If so, you can simply sew the hole closed by making small stitches through the hole.
Tie the thread and make it into a doll. Clip. Head Formatting: To form the head, thread the rest of the body yarn tail at the nape of the neck. Using a running stitch, go in and out of each stitch around the neck.
Once you’ve wrapped it all around, tug on the thread to create a neck. When you are satisfied with the shape of the head and neck, tie the yarn loose, and thread the yarn onto the doll and clip the thread.
Arms: Using stem thread, loosely molded on 8 (12, 16, 20) stitches. Work in garter seam or stockinette sewing for 12 (18, 24, 30) rows. Non constraint. Cut. Thread the end through the yarn needle. Slide the needles through each stitch as you remove them from the knitting needles.

Pull the thread tightly, gathering the arm edge. Tie but do not cut the yarn.
With the right sides together, sew the inside of the arm. Tie the end of this yarn to the end of the arm. DO NOT cut the end of the arm at the top of the arm. Knit into the end of the yarn where you sewed and clipped.
Tuck the arm.
Place the arms 1 or 2 rows below the neckline, with the arm seam pressed against the body. The right arm is on the sides of the doll but slightly forward of the doll.
Sew the arms for the doll. Since young children may decide to nibble on an arm, I always double-stitch an arm for added safety.
Create the second arm in the manner described above and attach.INSTRUCTIONS FOR MULTIPLE DOLL AND DOLL Note: Read all general instructions at the top of the page regarding materials, needles, gauges, stitches, and tail lengths. Since they are knitted and sewn together in the same style as the larger dolls, refer to those photos if you need clarification. Additional sizes are in parentheses: 3 (4 ″) Body: Loose molded over 10 (15) stitches. Work in garter seam or stockinette sewing for 14 (18) rows. Cut yarn. Head: Switch to the head color. Work in stockinette stitch for 6 (10) rows. DO NOT bind off. Cut. Thread the end of the yarn tail through a yarn needle. Slide the needles through each stitch as you remove them from the knitting needles. This part will then be pulled tight to gather the stitches. Knot but do not cut yarn. With the right sides together, sew the seam until you touch the top. Tie the tail of this yarn with the end of the yarn at the neck. DO NOT CUT THIS FIBER. Weave the end of the yarn that you used to sew the seam and clip. Using the end of the tail yarn at the base of the neck, sew the back of the head. Tie this yarn and weave at the tail and clip. Turn the right side of the doll outward. Use a needle to thread the remaining long end of the yarn at the neckline from the inside to the outside of the doll. This part will be used later to create the header. By pulling it tightly, you will get the top of the doll’s head. The knitting head should not be wrinkled. If you have wrinkles around the top of your head, try stuffing a little more. When satisfied, tie it off. Note: On larger dolls, you can make a “hole” in the top of the head. If so, you can simply sew the hole closed by making small stitches across the hole, cutting the thread and sewing it onto the doll. Clip.
