How To Beat Kirin Monster Hunter World

Hit it till it dies. Don’t get hit.The default response by many in the Monster Hunter community to folks seeking help with a tough creature might sound overly simple and trite. But never has it applied more to any creature than Arch-Tempered Kirin.Reading: how to beat kirin monster hunter worldI learned this the hard way during my first hunt when a wayward lightning strike killed me in one hit. At full health. With thunder resistance over 20. Unlike Arch-Tempered Kirin, however, it’s usually not their main attack. Like every other Kirin, the Arch-Tempered variant just spams variants of its lightning attack like beads being thrown around Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras.Arch-Tempered Kirin also gets some new lightning patterns that hit previously safe spots. Add beefed up health and you’ve got a spammy thunder pony that can take a licking and keep on ticking. There’s a reason why a lot of Monster Hunter World players don’t like fighting Kirin and this tougher variant turns up all those reasons to 11.Read more: Zomboid how to make sheetsFortunately, I learned from that first hunt and followed up that experience with consecutive successful hunts that rewarded me with Kirin Tickets for making its Gamma Armor as well as several Streamstones. If you’re having a tough time with the monster, here are some tips to help make your life a bit easier.

Gear up for survivability

It’s easy to fall in love with your favorite set that sports a smorgasbord of offensive skills for boosting attack and affinity. Unless you’re Canta Per Me or some other ridiculously skilled player, however, you’re going to need to compromise on some of those skills to get some survivability in your build. Here are some things that are especially helpful to get:Thunder Resistance: This is one of the easier skills to get so there’s no reason you shouldn’t have the maximum 3 points in it. You don’t even need to wear armor that comes with the skill if you want to stick with your regular sets. Either gem in 3 Thunder Resistance Jewel 1 decos, which the game usually loves to give away like candy or equip a Thunder Charm III, which you can easily make. This will give you 20 points in thunder resistance plus 10 points in defense. Getting 20 points is also important because it prevents you from getting Thunderblight. The status condition makes you more susceptible to getting stunned dizzy — not good when facing a crazed dragon horse that loves to cover the field in lightning. If you can’t get to the full 20 because you’re wearing armor with negative thunder affinity, no problem. Just eat a Veggie Platter at the canteen before a hunt to get Elemental Resistance (L). Between that and Thunder Resistance 3, you should hit that 20-point threshold.Health Boost: This right here can spell the difference between a one-hit kill and surviving a lightning strike with enough health to pop a health item. Like I mentioned earlier, I got one-shot in full health by Arch-Tempered Kirin even with 20 lightning defense. After gemming in Health Boost Level 3, I can now survive one of those wicked lightning strikes even when I don’t have my Thunderproof mantle on. You can get this easily by equipping 3 Vitality gems, which only require use of Level 1 slots (they drop easily enough that you should have the requisite amount if you’ve been at end game for a bit). Health Charm III is another option, though it requires you to have items such as a Rathian Plate, Rathian Ruby and Nergigante Gem to get from Level 1 to 3. Otherwise, you can use armor with the skill if you’re not too attached to a specific armor set.Stun resistance: Here’s another excellent skill to have, which prevents you from getting dizzy stuns if you max it out. Even with the ability to shake off Thunderblight from 20 Thunder Resistance, you can still get dizzy if you absorb enough attacks in a short amount of time. Admittedly, it can be tough to fit in if you’re using other slots to gem in Health Boost or Thunder Resistance. If that’s the case, see if you can equip a weapon that comes with extra slots.Paralysis resistance: Admittedly, I don’t run this in my anti-Kirin sets as I rarely get hit consecutively to be paralyzed. It does still happen once in a while so it might be worth slotting in exchange for another skill if it happens to you a lot.Mantle power: One big advantage Monster Hunter World players have over those of past games is the ability to use mantles. This is especially true with the addition of the Temporal Mantle during the Lunastra update, which auto dodges powerful attacks for you during a set amount of time. This allows you to go ham and be more aggressive while the mantle’s powers are in effect. It’s also a great way to stay alive when Arch-Tempered Kirin gets enraged and starts raining down lightning bolts like Zeus from Mount Olympus. The other mantle you’ll want to bring with you is the Thunderproof Mantle. This reduces the damage you receive from lighting bolts, allowing you survive and stay in the fight longer. Also, if you don’t have enough points in Thunder Resistance, putting this on will cure you of Thunderblight. If you don’t have one of these mantles, you can use a Vitality Mantle as a substitute. Ideally, you will want to alternate between two mantles for added protection. I usually start with the Temporal Mantle once Kirin starts going crazy, then I switch to the Thunderproof Mantle once it runs out. If you don’t get hit frequently, the Thunderproof Mantle lasts long enough that you don’t have to wait too long for the Temporal Mantle to come back up after the Thunderproof Mantle runs out.Get defensive: If you’ve been neglecting defensive items such as Armorskin drugs or Armorcharms and Armortalons, now’s a good time to use those. Just pop those pills, chug those drugs, buy that Armorcharm from the merchant, then buy another one to craft into an Armortalon. Given how many times I’ve survived a Kirin attack with just a sliver of health, every little bit of defense counts when things get hot and hectic.

Visualize the attack

So beefing up survivability is great and all but don’t forget the reason why you do it. You go through all that trouble so you have more opportunities to attack. After all, you can’t beat Kirin if you don’t give it a lickin’. Admittedly, tactics change a bit depending on the weapon that you use. However, there are some universal truths that apply regardless of what weapon you bring into the fight.Read more: how to delete diagnostic and usage data from ipad 2Become a demon: One downside to gearing up for survivability is that you might lose out on some of your attack skills. This makes it even more important to equip that Powercharm and Powertalon and chug those attack boosting items like Demon Powders and Demon or Megademon drugs. Some of those even stack so don’t hesitate to pile it on.Gohead-hunting: The head has always been one big weak spot for Kirin and its Arch-Tempered form is no different. Not only does it sustain the most damage and allow for skills like Weakness Exploit to trigger, it’s also a body part that doesn’t cause your weapons to bounce when the elder dragon gets enraged. Admittedly, it can be a pain to hit for melee weapon users, especially when Kirn starts gallivanting around, but Kirin provides several openings for you to strike at it. There will be times when Kirin will just start walking around casually, giving you a chance to smack its head. Kirin will also pause for a bit after most of its attacks, allowing you to sneak in some hits provided you stay close to the monster. One exception is shelling with Gunlance. Since these do the same amount of damage regardless where they hit, it makes hunting Kirin less stressful since you don’t have to worry about positioning as much. Life is definitely easier in this department for gunners, especially light bowgun and bow users as they can target the spot while maintaining mobility. All they need to do is watch the ground. For heavy bowgun users, sleep bombing with cluster spam is an option as well. Speaking of watching the ground…Ground rules: Kirin can definitely make life miserable. His greatest strength, however — his lightning spam — is also his biggest weakness. That’s because Kirin telegraphs pretty much all of his powerful attacks with a lot of lead time. All you need to do is look at the ground and watch for the telltale signs of lightning. Depending on the attack, the location of the lightning changes but there will always be a safe spot that you can get to. What you need to do is position yourself to avoid those strikes while maintaining a close enough distance to strike him when an opening presents itself. Do be careful when fighting in tight spaces, which can make them tougher to avoid. Fighting on white sand during daylight can also make it more difficult to spot the lightning marks. And definitely watch for blind spots behind you. Like Bazelgeuse’s exploding candy corn, lord knows how many times I’ve gotten hit by Kirn’s lightning from a blind spot behind me.Use your environment: Monster Hunter World makes the environment a legitimate part of your hunting strategy so make sure to put it to good use. This includes using ledges both high and low to mount Kirin, taking advantage of Vigorwasps to heal and using those natural smoke bombs, preferably with Kirin nearby, to disappear from his sight and hit the monster with a strong attack. Try to take advantage of wider spaces as well in order to avoid thunder attacks more easily. And if it starts running around, wait for the monster to come to you instead of chasing it all over the place. This makes you dictate the pace of the fight instead of letting Kirin dictate it for you.Don’t be greedy: Fighting Kirin requires a lot of restraint, more so than most other monsters. When I see people get in trouble with Kirin, it’s usually because they want to get their full combo in at the wrong time. Unless the monster is down, you’ll want to nibble and take smaller bites at Kirin, especially for melee weapon users. One thing I suggest to any blademaster having a tough time with Kirin is to try fighting him solo with a Great Sword using the good, old critical draw sniping technique where you do a draw attack on the head, roll and sheathe then repeat. I’m not just recommending this because it’s an actual viable strategy that works really well on Kirin (which it is). I’m recommending it because it’s a great way to simplify the battle and learn Kirin’s patterns and openings. Do this just four or five times and you’ll learn Kirin’s best approach and attack angles, the length of the elder dragon’s openings and when to hit and run or extend your attack. This is great knowledge that will help you when you go back to your weapon of choice.Play solo: This is part joke but also part true. In my entire history of hunting Kirin, I remember failing a hunt only three or so times while playing solo. I specifically remember two of those involving my first encounter with high-rank Kirin and my first Arch-Tempered Kirin hunt. The third involved a tempered hunt that did not unfold as I intended. In contrast, the greater majority of my multiplayer hunts end in failure. I estimate that only 1 in 5, perhaps even 1 in 7 of my multiplayer hunts actually succeed. A large part of this is because having more players means having a greater chance of faints stacking up. You can have three different people faint once, which is understandable as everyone makes mistakes. Sometimes, one or two people can account for the three faints. It’s especially a crapshoot when playing with randoms as you never know when you’ll get a good team or a not so good one. Sometimes, you can have a team of three solid hunters and still fail because one shaky hunter who might not be used to fighting Kirin can faint three times and make you fail. Multiplayer also makes monsters more unpredictable, which makes it harder to avoid attacks and also land your own hits as well. It basically makes it harder to fight the monster on your own terms. So unless you have your own team of good hunters, I advise against fighting Kirin with randoms. This is especially true with Arch-Tempered Kirin since its new lightning patterns are geared toward multiplayer parties. Throw in the lower stagger values in solo hunts and it’s really not as hard as some people might think.Anyway, those are my tips for fighting against Arch-Tempered Kirin. Hopefully, they give you a leg up, perhaps even a hoof up, when battling everyone’s favorite (or least favorite) dragon pony.Technobubble covers games, gadgets, technology and all things geek.
