Five Ways to Be a Great Godmother
Contents
1. Be a Happy “Aunt”:
Especially when Godchildren is young, enjoy the feeling of enjoying the pampering, doting of “aunties”. I’m not suggesting you buy your way into their hearts with toys, rides to the amusement park, and pints of ice cream. Sure, when you can, treat them with some links on mint chocolate chips. However, the new connection is the most important thing. And, for children, fun is the fastest way to their hearts. Combine joy with your undivided attention and you’ve got the perfect foundation on which to build lifelong trust and respect. (Not to mention you’re giving mom a fun day off.)
2. Prioritize spending time together:
If you live close to each other, go on a monthly or quarterly date to do something special together. An afternoon in the park, a trip to a science center or zoo and a G-rated movie, followed by lunch at Chick-fil-A are all fun and inexpensive outings. A day at home doing crafts, coloring, playing in the yard or baking cookies is also great. The options for fun and chat are limitless. Maintaining a strong connection is important to being a good Godmother. When your Children are young, your time together is the premise to transition from a sly aunt to the trusted and respected confidant and advice giver you’ll want in your teens. adolescence and adulthood.
3. Stay Connected Even When Miles Separate You:
If you’re not nearby, connect with them via FaceTime, Google Chat, or Skype for more of a one-on-one chat. When they’re young, you can even pre-send copies of the coloring page(s), color them together during chat, and then compare the pictures. hello, send a Vine video or Snapchat photo, or use any of their favorite social media platforms. If some of those terms sound foreign to you, Google them. Keep it up to date so you can relate to your Children according to their relationships at this point in their lives. It will help you keep the bond that was first formed in childhood and strengthen it, so they turn to you, the best of hearts, as they seek advice in the shaky ground of teenage years.
4. Cards and Gifts as part of Connect with Children:
Remember important holidays and their birthdays with cards. Be sure to include a letter. If they’re young, they won’t fully appreciate your letter, but mom will keep it for them, and when they’re older, they’ll know you’ve always been there. A gift isn’t a necessity, but if it’s within your budget, a gift is usually sent at these times. You can stop after they graduate from high school, or like most moms do, Godmothers can continue to remember these days for the rest of their lives.
5. Most importantly, keep God in the “Lord” – clear:
Godparents are spiritual examples to their Children of how to relate to, pray, trust, rely on, love, worship, and revere God. While it is the parent’s first and foremost duty, as a Parent you are also there to be a living example. Pray continuously for your Children. Grow in your relationship with God so they can see a prosperous example outside of their immediate family of what a godly woman looks like. When your Godson grows up to be a young man, you will be like that. Through your mountaintop and valley experiences, do not pave the way for your faith. Allow your Children to see your joys and sorrows (in an age-appropriate way) and see how your faith weaves into every aspect of your life.
Extra Tip: Back Up Your Parents:
As they turn seventeen and then into their teens and early adulthood, there’s often a time when kids feel like their mom and dad are just a molecule or two smarter than dirt. However, you were always there, listening and encouraging. You’re the smart one – not mom or dad! You’re cool, plus you “get” them. They can talk to you because – well – because you are you, and you always know how to help. And when they do, you will share the same wisdom that their parents shared. And your God children will probably listen and we hope, remember it, because it comes from you. Ask them privately how the situation is going and what they want the outcome to be. As long as you can honestly tell your kids it’s the right thing to do, respond to parents. And while you’re at it, compliment yourself on how much you respect and admire their parents. Give examples of times when their mom or dad gave you great advice, what was the result, and how you were glad you followed that advice.
