Tech Thursday #007: Spektrum Binding Procedure
With many of our projects, we set them up with a simple RC control for initial testing. This allows us to verify the robot’s electrical distribution and mechanical features are working properly before implementing more advanced control methods and/or autonomy. We tend to use Spektrum brand receivers and remotes because they are easy to use and reliable. Depending on the recipient they can bind in two different ways. The first is called SmartSafe and the second is your standard Fail Safe.
Smart Safes vs Failed Safes
Contents
Unsafe is when you force the receiver to set position before signal loss. Smart Safe holds last command for all channels except throttle. This is useful for RC aircraft in that the idea is that the aircraft holds position until the connection is re-established. For ground robots, this is not desirable. Those extra channels are usually used for arms, actuators etc. Holding the last position can cause the robot to run away from you out of control or extra arms, actuators, etc. can cause damage to the robot itself. Binding procedure
Before tying the receiver, make sure that everything is wired correctly. Follow the wiring with your eyes and make sure that the RC connectors are not upside down, the correct motors/actuators are connected to the correct channels, and the receiver is connected to the 5V source.WARNING: If using an RC receiver to connect to more than one motor controller, such as a Sabertooth or SyRen motor controller, make sure that the receiver receives only 5V from one of the dynamic controllers. muscle. Connecting the 5V terminal between multiple motor controllers may cause damage.Read more: how to use headset mic on pc without splitterNOTE: If you are using the AR9020 receiver, make sure that all satellite antennas are plugged in. Receivers will not connect properly without them. AR6110e has no satellite antenna.
