How To Change Power Steering Pump Dodge Ram 1500

This article applies to Dodge Ram 2nd Generation (1994-2001). The power steering pump can fail for a number of reasons. The pump may run without liquid and may cause damage to the pump impeller as well as the housing. Seals inside the pump can be damaged over time due to dirt and improper fluid use. Vibration from worn engine mounts or a rough engine can damage the bearings inside the pulley shaft, creating noise and reducing system performance. conveniently located at the front and top of the engine, making the job easier than most other makes and models.

Step 1 – Remove the zigzag belt

Using a 15mm wrench, twist the belt pulley zigzag to remove tension from the belt. While holding the pulley in the open position, remove the belt from the accessory pulleys.Dodge Ram 1994-2001: How to replace the power steering pumpFigure 1. Diagram of zigzag belt routing.

Step 2 – Remove the fluid from the power steering pump

This can be done in many different ways. Refer to Related Article: How to change power steering fluid. The most common means of doing this is to use a suction device (turkey hood, syringe or equivalent device) and draw the liquid from the power steering reservoir, pumping the liquid out of the pump with how to move the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times. Then remove the additional liquid.

Step 3 – Lift and support the front of the truck

Step 4 – Remove the pump pipes

There are two connections to the power steering pump. The top line is the return line and a squeeze clamp secures the rubber part of the line to the hardware. While squeezing the clamp, pull the cord and twist the rubber band away from the hard line. The screwdriver can also be used to open the line, now, use the 18mm wrench to remove the pressure line. It is easier to reach from below the truck. Plugging both of these lines with a properly sized bolt will ensure no fluid leaks out and no objects fall into the system.Dodge Ram 1994-2001: How to replace the power steering pumpFigure 3. Step 5 – Remove the power steering pump and bracket

Three bolts and one stud with a nut hold the bracket to the motor. Rivets are located on the upper left side of the bracket. Remove the nut with a 9/16 ″ wrench, working around the coolant hose. There will be two ground wires attached to the studs. Move them up and out of the way. Now remove the rivet as well as the remaining three bolts with a 9/16 ″ wrench and socket. The bolts are in the form of long and short pairs. Remove the bracket and pump assembly from the motor.Dodge Ram 1994-2001: How to replace the power steering pumpFigure 4. Step 7 – Transfer the bracket and studs to the new pump

Step 8 – Install the pulley on the new pump

You can use the power steering pump pulley installation tool or two standard 5/16″ bolts (one 2-3 in length and the other 1 and a quarter inch) with a stack washer 5/16 ″. The pulley should be held in place with a strap wrench or similar tool. Start pressing the pulley into the shaft using the longer bolt and end with the shorter pin. The pump has been fully installed after the pump face is flush with the shaft.

Step 9 – Install the new pump in the engine

Reverse the removal process to complete the installation.

  • Locate the pressure line and install a new O-ring at the end.
  • Once everything is screwed back on, fill the reservoir with fresh liquid (MS5139 or equivalent) until it reaches the cold fill line. Refer to the article How to change the power steering fluid.
  • Lower the truck and start the engine again. A whining sound coming from the pump indicates the pump has low liquid levels or air is still in the system. Repeat the hemostasis procedure and/or check for fluid leaks.
  • When the engine is running, make sure that the zigzag belt is tracking straight on the pulley and that the pulley is not swaying on the shaft.
