1. How to Draw Snakes and Lizard Scales

The scales of snakes and lizards are very similar in structure, so I’ll show you them side by side. Please choose the one you like more!

Step 1

Start by drawing the boundaries of the body, with a line in the center. Use Pencil HB and Dominator for this, and don’t press too hard — these lines should be easy to hide later.

Step 2

At the top, draw the first scale. Its shape and size will determine the rest of the pattern. Snakes tend to have longer and finer scales than lizards.

Step 3

Take back the ruler and draw a line across the “body”, just below the graduated ruler.

Step 4

Divide the body into identical segments. You can use a ruler to measure the height of the scales if you want, but it’s not necessary — just make sure they look similar enough.

Step 5

Draw a curved line through the four segments.

Step 6

Copy this curve along the body. Be very careful—these curves must have the same shape, or you’ll get a chaotic pattern of different sized proportions.

Step 7

Draw the same curve backwards…… And again copy it over the whole body. A pattern will appear!

Step 9

Depending on the species, the scales can take on a variety of shapes. Some snakes have them round and convex, but they are flatter towards their base. If the scales are not placed too tightly, the flat base can be seen. On the other hand, lizards often have horny scales, with a “spiky” at the end.

Step 10

The model of the scales has been done! Before you start shading, you should consider the color scheme first. The shaded dark color is different from the light color. The pattern on the snake’s body is usually in the form of scales. In lizards, coloration is usually spread throughout the body regardless of individual scales. The scales can also be individually colored. Pencil HB for a bright color base, and 2B for dark people. Tilt the pencil and draw fairly lightly.

Step 11

Use the same pencils and press a little harder to make the sides darker, giving the texture a more rounded look.

Step 12

Shade the individual proportions now, noting their 3D appearance. Check the reference if you have problems imagining it.

Step 13

Use a pencil that is one step softer for each shadow to create more contrast. Follow the pattern of light.

Step 14

Take a close look at your drawing and decide what else needs work. Take your time — this last stage will take the longest!

2. How to Draw Crocodile, Crocodile and Dinosaur Scales

Alligators and crocodiles have a very characteristic scale, but the scales of dinosaurs resemble them in one respect: they don’t overlap, but they are “calluses” on the skin, as if it were difficult to break off. to stay flexible (imagine the cracked earth).
