Many people think that animating frame by frame is tedious and time consuming, but it doesn’t have to be. The animated scribble technique is a perfect example of an easy way to create animated, handcrafted graphic elements. You’ve seen this effect in a lot of popular music videos over the past few years, including those of Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars. Let’s take a closer look at how, in just a few simple steps, you can add eye-catching graphics to your videos.
Step 1: Prepare the workspace
First, I need to set up my workspace. For this tutorial, I will be adding some animated flames that will come from the back of a race car. I will add the flames using the Brush tool, which you can find in the Tools panel or by using the keyboard shortcut Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (PC) + B. Brush tool drawing only works on the Layers panel – you can’t draw directly on the components panel. To open my clip in the Layers panel, I simply double click on the layer. Next, I’ll set up my brush. Read: how to draw in the following effects
Step 2: Prepare your brush

The Paint panel allows you to change the opacity, flow, color, diameter, blend mode, channels, and duration. Clicking the diameter button takes you directly to the Brushes panel, where you can specify the brush’s diameter, angle, roundness, hardness, and spacing. You can even save your brush settings for future use. The duration section of the Paint panel is one of the most important properties. Since this is a fast-moving clip, I wanted my flames to work as fast and furiously as possible. For this reason, I will change the duration to “Single Frame”. If I wanted something a little softer or less obvious, I could change the Duration to “Custom” and then manually enter whatever frame rate I wanted. With both my workspace and brush ready, it’s time to scribble.
Step 3: Scribble
To start my doodle animation, I’ll put my playhead in the first frame of the clip in the timeline. Using the Brush tool directly on the Layers panel, I will paint my flame on the first canvas. Now it’s as simple as drawing the same flames for each frame. This particular clip is two seconds long, shot at 25fps, so if I wanted flames throughout the entire clip, I would need to draw these same flames 50 times. If you want to create time-varying animations, it’s imperative that you know the length of the clip to be able to make small changes. and it can be a headache to animate frame by frame. To quickly navigate individual frames inside After Effects, use the Page Up/Down keys. To resize your brush diameter, hold down the Command (Mac) or Control (PC) key while you click and drag up or down. Final animation.Looking for more video tutorials? Check these out.
