Read: How to Make a Wooden Stable So I decided to customize a Breyer Deluxe Wood Barn with Cupola. I love the flexibility this barn offers. It has a ton of different uses for photography, aside from being a place where I can decorate however I see fit. This barn is made of unfinished wood, so I decided to dye the cages before putting them together. The first stop was the hardware store, where I left with four cans of yellowed furniture and materials, as well as gloves and a mask. I’ve never used stain before, so I’m really excited to get started. I choose colors that I feel reflect a real barn, while avoiding colors that are too dark or light because the barn is part of the picture and not the picture itself. since the wood is unfinished, stain removal is a slightly easier option. That being said, I thought it would be fun to draw it as well. There are endless possibilities with this barn, and I love how you can really personalize it to your own. This is how I made a box of wood chips into a horse house.

Dyeing barn

I separated the pieces by color with my helper. I label each jar of stains because they have funny names, and I don’t want to mix them up. Stains are not easy to remove, so I want to make sure I get it right the first time.2 523b2164 f36f 4f51 b030 53514954c6dd grandeRead: How to Make a Wooden Wine Cellar I worked my way through all the pieces, dyeing each color to the color I chose for it. The stains are not too dark, (except for the roof) but the difference is immediately noticeable.3 10ae30e0 0619 4a9b 9f25 96b719fc6aec grandeReading: how to make a wooden wine shed Some pieces need more than one coat of color paint to get the color I want. Stains are a very messy and smelly thing to do! I have protected my work area, which is a place with excellent ventilation. This is a must! Make everything come true with accessories

Now that I’ve got this amazing barn dyed, built and ready, it’s time to move in. There are some really great props and accessories in the Traditional and Free (Classic/1:12) ratio to make this a practical working barn for your Breyer horses. The sky really is your limit And now we’re going down the rabbit hole to the fun part… accessories! One set even comes with POOP! There are a few extras that I think are important, which are mostly easy to get, such as sawdust and hay. Some small scale props made by me (see other posts on Tack and Prop Making and DIY blogs). It’s great that you can find the right ones. Think arts and crafts stores, antique stores, toy stores, and even thrift stores. Online, there are plenty of resources that sell additional items in a 1:9 or 1:12 ratio that will work. Even in the pet store, you can find crumbs and hay if needed. When you go out, you can get some hay to use as hay or litter! As I lay out the accessories in the barn, I try and visualize what a real working coop would look like. I find details to be the most important factor in creating a realistic portrait of a working barn. And when I put it all together, I had a convincing setting for my model horses.
