How I Made A Pair Of Leather Sandals

I am very happy after making my red leather ballet shoes and want to make more shoes. This time I decided to try making a pair of leather sandals. I ordered the soles and insoles from topqa.info and used their online course and YouTube to figure out the process. This is also a good way to check out the new skin care kit I just bought from Amazon: I found this great video on YouTube explaining what you do with all those different tools and that proved to be really convenient.

Cut pieces

For some reason the only form with the instruction booklet didn’t open and I never got a reply when I tried to ask after it. Eventually, I realized that I could use my existing sandals and sample the soles directly from them. So that’s what I did.Cut off soles and linings. The next step is to cut the sole and insole to the correct size. The skin is thick and I was sweating to go through the material. When I finished all four pieces, my right hand was shaking and for the rest of the evening I struggled to lift even a cup of coffee with it!The sole is ready! However, I’ve cut the sole to the right size and I can move on. I cut strips of paper and wrapped them around my legs to figure out where the strap was. In the end, I decided to have two criss-cross straps in the front and two slings that go around my ankles. I realized that straight paper straps weren’t the optimal shape to go around my ankles, so I marked out a few darts and then added a little curve to the actual pattern pieces. which I cut out of embossed reptile skin. The 16 mm strap width is determined by the buckle size.

Pair the shoes together

Sand the edges. The first thing I do the next day is to sand the edges of the sole and soleplate together to get nice, even edges.Bevel and polish leather edges.Read more: how to put sd card in galaxy s7 I then used the chamfer tool from my new set to round the edges a bit. Then I started polishing the sole edges. I wet them with a rag and then get this wooden leather polisher:Leather polishing tool. What you do with it, is you either position the edge of the leather into one of the grooves or use a straight drill and then rub the wooden tool back and forth to create friction. Friction smoothes the edge of the skin beautifully.Mark the length and position of the sandal strap. The next step is to mark the length and position of the belt. This takes some time. I took the measurement and then got confused as to the left/right/front/back/top or bottom strap and had to start all over again. Finally, I labeled each strap on the wrong side to see exactly where they went.Glue the straps into place. Then I glued the outsole on and let the slippers dry overnight.

End touch

I made holes for the locking prongs using my Prym pliers. However, I then switched to a leather puncher with four prongs to make holes for the stitches that hold the buckle in place. The leather sandals are coming together.I sewed the buckle hem by hand using a saddle stitch and two needles:The details of the buckle tighten the sandal. The kit that comes with this cool looking punch drill. At first I thought it was a normal punch with interchangeable pointed tips but when I pressed it against the skin I noticed that the pressure caused the tip to rotate like in a drill. After polishing with water, I took the leather cream and applied it evenly over the edge to make it darker and then finished the edge with my Dremel buff. The slightly darker tone, which the leather cream lends to the skin, is quite nice so I ended up blending it in on the sole and I wanted a little extra for the rather plain looking shoes. I prepared these pre-cut tans and I glued them on with some rhinestones:Add some embellishments.

The finished shoes

Here are my new sandals finished. I’m really happy for how they turned out!Finished leather sandals.Unfortunately, it’s been raining continuously today so I can’t walk outside. However, I was able to let my husband take a few pictures at the front door.Front of the shoe. The straps cross each other at the heel and keep the heel comfortably in place.Shoes from behind.I’ve been walking around with these guys in my house for a while now and they feel really great. The skin is soft and nothing seems to hurt or (worse!) This was a really fun project and I learned a lot from it. Now I just have to wait for the sunnier days to wear these!
