How To Make Paint Look Old And Chipped
Do you crave a rough finish and are not satisfied with just sanding? I have a solution for you that will make your projects look old and worn with very little effort. In fact, you can have all the necessary items around the house right now. This will be your “lining” and it will show up when we get the top coat for these parts. I am using Americana Décor Chalky Finish for these examples. After the primer is coated and completely dry (for a powder finish, please wait 2 hours), rub the candle all over your project. There is a candle. Just an ordinary old candle that you don’t need anymore. You can even get one from a thrift or secondhand store. This candle wax is the key to our rustic finish. The more candle wax you apply, the more rustic the final finish will be, so keep this in mind.Apply a coat of topcoat to your project right on top of the candle wax. You can apply as many layers here as you like. It took two coats of paint for me to get the look I wanted on these pieces. Allow to dry for at least the amount of time recommended on the package.Read more: How to refine edges in photoshop cc 2017 It’s time to reveal that rustic finish NO sanding and NO mess. Grab a hair dryer and heat up your project. You may even start to see some bubbling of wax under the painted surface. That is okay. A few minutes under the dryer is all that is needed. You only need to heat just enough to soften the wax underneath the paint. For larger projects you can do this in small chunks. While the surface is still warm, use whatever tape product you have on hand for this next step. You don’t want to use drawing tape or masking tape for this step. Strong adhesive tape is required. Just stick it to your surface, press down and remove. This can be done quickly as there is no reason to leave the tape on for any length of time. NOTE: Use a new bandage each time. You are left with a beautiful rustic chipped paint finish as shown with the left sections in the image below. The lower right sections don’t have any distress. So how is this better than just sanding? Number one is that it’s super easy to do with no elbow grease and no mess. But secondly, it just gives a different look to your project, then makes your project go bad. I thought I’d give you some comparison shots so you can judge for yourself which method is right for your next project. The image below gives you an idea of some wooden tags. NOTE: These final projects were also painted with Americana Décor Crème Wax in Golden Brown. As you can see, the candle wax version makes your project look like the paint has chipped away over time. This is a more rustic look then just sanding can give your projects. You can see the difference in the candle holders below. I think this can give an idea of how this technique would look on a larger piece or even furniture.I think both techniques are valuable. Which one you use will depend on the project and the final look you want. Keep this page bookmarked for future reference and try it out on your next rustic project. Your rustic chipped paint finish will never look better once you crack the candle wax!Read more: how to chase bees in the chimney
