What is it?
If you’ve never heard of it, Gouache (pronounced gwaash) is a slightly misunderstood paint that essentially acts as an opaque watercolor. It’s made with binders and milled pigments (such as gum arabic, oxides and preservatives), which give it an opaque, velvety white color – but what makes it opaque is the addition of chalk or white pigment.Gouache is actually one of the oldest used mediums in history,  and is still used in a number of different professions (not just fine arts).

Unlike mud, when applied, Gouache dries to a vivid, opaque color. It is often compared to traditional watercolor, but unlike watercolor, the application of gouache is not used as a stain and does not require the whiteness of the paper to amplify the brilliance of the colors. It can also create flat, flawless areas of color that are difficult to create with watercolors. Because the pigment particles are larger in the pigment (they don’t have to be as small as the ones to wash through), they are less likely to suffer from problems like “blooming” or “washout” that occur with the color. country. Gouache’s matte finish has been widely used in illustrations and advertising, as there are no photographic reflections to capture images for production.
