The ball joint is used to act as a universal swivel connecting the upper or lower control arms to the crankshaft, which is where the bearing and wheel are supported. This joint is also responsible for allowing the steering to operate as it is the bottom part of the shaft for the shaft to rotate. Constructed of a metal housing with a spherical metal ball, the ball joint is designed with a threaded stud attached at one end. This ball joint is designed with a lightly taper hole that locks into a taper hole for strength measurement when attaching the ball connection to the spindle. The ball is trapped inside the shell with enough space to move freely without playing. Grease used to lubricate joints may have a Zerk coupling used to fill the joint at regular service intervals. The vehicle must be raised off the ground and supported on a support. You may need to remove the wheel to access the ball joint more freely. There are two types of ball joints, one facing down while the other facing upwards. Each is similar and will require a different position of the break bar to undo. We will cover both styles in the tutorial. All ball joint connections are a coupler that must be released to undo. This guide is for strut mounts with coil springs encased in struts. If this is to be done on a direct-spring suspension, the bottom handle should be supported using a jack and then slowly lowered when the ball joint has been undone. Removing the cotter pin The cotter pin is used to preserve the connection between the ball joint and the control arm in the event of a loose nut. The nut in the picture below is called a castle nut which has 6 positions where the cotter pin can keep the nut moving. Use a pair of side cutters (dyke) to remove the cotter pin from the castle nut, this will allow the nut to be removed. 2. Loosening the Castle Nut Use a 19mm to 22mm wrench or socket to loosen the nut by turning it counterclockwise. These nuts can be quite tight so make sure the socket or wrench is perpendicular to the nut before applying force to avoid rounding and damage to the nut. Ball Joint Cone Release Use a large pry bar and wedge it between the bottom handle and the top of the spindle bulkhead. Make sure the pry bar is firmly in place as you will need to apply pressure to release the joint. While applying downward force, strike the baffle of the lower handle to release the ball joint cone. In most cases this will require more than one hammer blow to release the ball joint. If you have trouble with this step, have a helper put more pressure on the puck while using a larger hammer to hit the shots. This will “shock” the loose joint and you will feel a pop when the joint is released. Once the ball joint is in operation, complete the removal of the lower ball joint nut and continue with the repair. We will show the upward pattern of the ball joint below. Once the cotter pin has been removed, use a 22mm to 24mm wrench to remove the lower ball joint nut by turning it counterclockwise. It is okay if the steering wheel turns during this step. Once the nut is loose, do not remove it completely. Leave the nut on the ball joint pin for a few turns. This will protect the threads when disconnected. Read more: How to counter electric giants Simultaneously wedge a large pry bar while exerting downward pressure between the bulk head of the spindle and the bottom handle. While keeping pressure on the ball joint, use the hammer to “shock” the spindle baffle this time. It may take a few hammer hits but hang there until the ball joint cone releases. When the ball joint taper is released, there will be a noticeable gap between the ball joint dust sleeve and the shaft. The gap between the ball joint nut and the spindle will also disappear. You can now finish removing the ball joint nut. 4. Disconnecting the Handle Pull the bottom control arm while keeping the spindle steady. Pull the bottom handle down to disconnect it from the main shaft. At this point, the bottom of the spindle should be able to move around freely. This method will work for both top and bottom handles.
