How To Remove Fence Post With Car Jack

The first step is to remove the fence sections from the post so that you now only have one standalone post. Now dig a shallow hole around the pillar. This hole should be deep enough that the top of the cement base of the pillar can be seen. I find it best to dig a wide hole around the post using a full-size steel shovel, then switch to a garden-sized short-handled shovel to clear the area right next to the cement base. As you can see in this photo, when you get to the cement block you just need to clear the dirt on its sides to get a steel cable around it. The next step is to cut the cylinder where it comes into contact with the cement. Now wrap a steel cable around the cement, tie a knot and feed it backwards so that when pulled, it will tighten like a noose. Make sure to pull the cable down far enough that it can find some irregularities in the cement to latch on to itself as it begins to tighten. Next, place a sturdy base (in this case, 4×4) across the hole. Make sure it’s relatively flat, both horizontally and vertically. Wedge pieces of stone or wood underneath the edges to smooth it if needed. It is very important to place the jack at the center of the load and attach the cables to the jacks on opposite sides of the block. The car jack is only used to support the load that the weight pushes straight down on it at an angle of 90 degrees. If you notice that the jack is starting to tilt in one direction or another, you must stop, release the weight, and position the jack on the base so that evenly distributed weight. Once you have it in place, all you have to do is slowly turn the jack up and pull the cement base out of the hole. Once you notice a block movement, you are at home freedom. Jack won’t pull the block completely out of the hole because the top of the cement will be in contact with your platform, but at this point it should be so loose that two men can lift it out with their hands. I’ve done this twice already and I think it’s a great way to get work done without worrying about your back. However, I’m concerned that on both occasions I’ve done this, I’ve found pieces of plastic trash underground. This time I took pictures. My brother and I removed a broken post from our parents’ backyard fence. My parents moved into this house in 2000 and from the fence it was at least 5 years old when they got there. This means garbage I see it’s been buried for at least 17 years and hasn’t even started to fall apart! The writing on the packaging is still legible. I wonder to myself, how much plastic is buried in the ground? If this thing lasts forever, what impact will it have on the environment when it is buried? If I found 3 pieces in just this one small hole, there must be quite a bit of stuff buried around the globe. Use disposable plastic and the products it’s wrapped in. I’ve known it clogs landfills and the Ocean; Now in this fence post project, I know that there could be a large amount of plastic buried in the Earth.
