How To Replace Throttle Position Sensor Chevy Silverado

This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado GMT800 (1999-2006). Simply put, when you step on the gas pedal, its position is sent to the ECM and then to the throttle position sensor (TPS). TPS controls the position of the throttle and the amount of fuel injected into the cylinders, adjusting the air-to-fuel ratio for proper combustion. Without the right mixture of fuel and air, your Silverado will not achieve optimal engine performance and fuel economy. In fact, you’ll notice rough idling, stalling, engine knocking or misfire, and hesitancy when accelerating, all of which can be attributed to TPS. faulty. Step 1 – Remove the intake manifold

Contents

  • Open the hood and use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps on each end of the air intake manifold. One hose clamp is positioned by the MAF sensor, and the other is located on the throttle body.
  • When the hose clamps are loose, slide the air intake hose out and set it aside.

Step 2 – Gain access to TPS

  • Attach a 15mm socket with ratchet and extension to the center pin of the tension pulley.
  • Turn the bolt clockwise to loosen the drive belt tension enough to pull if removed only from the alternator pulley.
  • Release the tensioner pulley.
  • Use a 15mm socket with ratchet wheel to remove the three bolts that secure the generator to the bracket.
  • Push the alternator to the side (away from the engine). You do not have to remove the generator completely.

Step 3 – Remove TPS

  • The throttle position sensor is located on the right side of the throttle body. You should see (connected to TPS) a black harness connector.
  • Pull back on the metal clamp of the connector and then pull the connector out.
  • Use the Torx T20 driver to remove the two bolts that are holding the TPS to its holder.

Step 4 – Install New TPS

Set throttle position in reverse order of removal.

  • Place the new TPS on the throttle body and secure it with T20 Torx bolts.
  • Line up the generator and screw back into the bracket.
  • Loosen the tensioner pulley and slide the drive belt back to the alternator pulley. Refer to the drive belt routing diagram on the heatsink shield.
  • Release the tensioner pulley and make sure the drive belt is in place on each pulley.
