In its most basic form, jazz singing is like any other singing genre. All singers carry musical instruments inside their bodies. Their lungs provide fuel, their upper side controls resonance, and the rest of the body must be relaxed. Learning how to sing good jazz won’t just impress your friends at karaoke night; it will help you sing better in general.

1. Choose the right song

The first step to singing jazz well is choosing a song that you can sing well. Study your own voice, paying attention to your comfortable pitch. Try singing along to different jazz songs. Can you comfortably hit all the lows and highs? The pacing seems too fast? Consider singing a piece in a different key if needed.

2. Remember to breathe

If a singer were a car, the breath would be gasoline. The better you breathe like a singer, the longer you can sing without breathing. To breathe like a singer, stand up straight but not stiff. Place your hands on your ribcage (above the waist) so that four fingers are in front of the ribcage and thumbs are behind. Take a slow breath in, trying to feel your chest expand in all directions. This is how you should breathe while singing.

3. Speak easily

Using your “singer breath,” practice projecting words and phrases from the song like a normal speech. Now add the notes again, maintaining the same quality as the voiceover. Use a mirror to make sure your body and face stay relaxed while singing.

4. Lift that palate

The soft palate is the scaly muscle just behind the hard palate in your mouth. This muscle moves up and down to seal your nasal passages from the rest of your mouth and throat. Singers use the soft palate to keep air out of the nose while singing, since singing out of the nose produces a nasal-like sound quality. To lift your soft palate, pretend you smell something terrible but have a shopping bag on both hands. Practice “plugging” your nose in this way without actually touching it. Test to see if your soft palate is tight by singing a note, lifting the roof of your mouth, and inserting and retracting your nose with your fingers. If the sound quality changes, your soft palate is not entirely good.

5. Exercising Your Weakness

When practicing jazz songs, you may find that some passages are more difficult than others. Learn the hardest parts. Why are they difficult? Are there fast-moving notes? Got a big leap? Try practicing these parts slowly, taking the words out and using a single vowel sound (like ‘E’ or ‘Ah’). Find bar workouts that address that specific problem and make them your warm-up routine.
