How To Take Pictures In The Shower

I know… that’s one of the things people criticize ‘selfies’ because… they were taken by people in their bathrooms with poor lighting! was taken in the bathroom and some of my favorite photos remain. This is really a great way to start having fun with self-portraits! Here are some of my original bathroom mirror adventures (many of which are tricks & reminders that I still use and which I will share in this post).bathroomIn the gray rainy winter months here on the West Coast, taking self-portraits outside can be really difficult and my house doesn’t have much natural light, let alone the short days. So what do we have to do to complete Project 365 self-portraits or just check in with ourselves in a self-portrait? We work with what we have! Well, to stay inspired during these winter months. What do I do? I take selfies in the bathroom (and I’m not afraid to admit it)! Usually, when I’m doing a Be Your Own session, many of the self-portraits I take end up being ‘bathroom selfies’ like we sometimes try to take every day for a month. .. some of those shots need to be indoors or we need to do them at the end of a busy day and the bathroom is a great place to make that happen! If you’ve ever felt silly taking self-portraits in your bathroom… this is for you! It doesn’t mean you’re useless! In fact, I think it’s one of the best ways for us to continue our practice of portraiture and to take pictures where we feel empowered to keep us going until the face is full. the sky comes out more regularly! So here are 6 reasons why you might want to take a self-portrait in your bathroom:

  • It really is possible to have amazing lighting in your bathroom (and I’ll give you a few tips on how to do that in today’s post)!
  • Usually have white walls (which help reflect light) or a neat colored wall or fun wallpaper! All make great backgrounds for your self-portraits!
  • It’s a place where you can really find some privacy in your home for self-portraits!
  • There’s usually a mirror in the bathroom (and I’ll give you some tricks on how to make that help)!
  • There are also often props you can use in your photos nearby!
  • You can use Apps or Filters to experiment with bathroom photos and make you shine in your photos!
  • Maybe the first thing I should tell you is that if you’re thinking that you need a big bathroom to be able to take great selfies in… you don’t! My bathrooms are as small as they are. There are 2 small wall spaces that I can use, which are as wide as my body… that’s it… and that’s really all you need!broom2LightSo something about most bathrooms in homes or apartments, it’s a well-lit bathroom! There is usually some sort of ‘makeup light’ around the mirror. Regarding the indoor lighting in our house (and not the natural light that can enter your home), this is possibly the best artificial light in your house because it is so bright! This is the challenge. We can easily do a few simple things that can make light not work in our favor. We block our own light! Now, if we are taking self-portraits in our bathroom, the easiest way to do it is to take arm-length self-portraits and when we raise our arms to do that, they can also be Our biggest challenge! We can easily bring our arms up between ourselves and block our own light! That doesn’t make it a bad photo, but there’s a lot more potential for great light than just blocking our own light. To change this, we just need to notice where the light is coming from and notice when we put our hand or phone in that direction! Top Q&AOther tips for getting the best light from your bathroom:

    • Get close to it! Experiment with where you are standing. With any light source, the further we are physically away from it, the less light will be emitted.
    • Notice where you are standing in relation to the light source. Are you facing it? Traverse towards it? Try taking self-portraits at each of those angles and see what works best for you.
    • Try turning off the flash! I know that makes sense since you’re indoors, but let’s also explore what light you have in the bathroom and how to work with it without a flash! Indeed, it really helps sometimes, but I definitely encourage you to try exploring those bathroom self-portraits without it!
    • As you may have noticed with the examples above of my original bathroom self-portraits… many of them have this real yellow glow to them. Color temperature or white balance is a bit of a challenge for some bathroom self-portraits. My favorite way to solve that problem… .make black and white photos! So, if you take a bathroom selfie that you like but you don’t like the tone of the light… try making it black and white!

broom6WallSo in the bathroom, I like to take self-portraits against the wall. There are a couple of reasons for this… the most important of which is that if I stand in the middle of the room and take a photo, there’s a good chance that my background is my bathtub (and the hand wash hanging from the railing), sink or eek… toilet! I don’t know about you… but I really don’t want any of that in the picture! When we take a photo against a wall (or standing a step or two away from it), it focuses the image on us and not the background of our bathroom! It makes it as if it can be taken anywhere!broom3PrivacyThat’s right! For many of us, the bathroom can be a place of complete peace of mind when closing the door and being alone for a while! When I started taking self-portraits, this was the easiest place to take them. I go when I’m having a rough day and need to take a self-portrait to invite myself to feel the truth of the emotions I’m going through. Privacy can be really important for that too. Sometimes when we’re crying or having a bad day, self-portraits and compassion can be really helpful. but also to share the truth about our experience with ourselves, through our camera.broom4ToolsThe other great thing about our bathroom photography is that there are often plenty of accessible things nearby to use as props. Maybe you could wear that favorite necklace you’ve hung on your bathroom jewelry rack? Or the towel you have nearby? Or fiddle with makeup (I’m a late makeup guy… sometimes it really feels like when I put it on, I’m approaching my inner 16 ‘playing with makeup’ and that’s it. makes me happy) So yes, get access to props, jewelry, things you can adorn yourself with, maybe your closet nearby? You can even discover how to dress up as your own alter ego and put on ‘dresses’! Invite players and props to test your self-portrait!broom1MirrorAs you can see from my early mirror self-portraits above, I started by picking up my camera and shooting in the mirror. After testing out some of the tips I’m going to share with you, I’ve found that I love taking photos without a camera and there are some great ways to do it! Read more: how to fund a game on robloxNow, this was a few years ago so there is no front facing camera on iPhone! The mirror helped me learn how to frame a photo. Here’s how to do it:By standing as if I were looking in the mirror and holding up the phone as if I were taking a self-portrait…. I can look in the mirror and see the back of the camera. This also works when I use my DSLR. I can hold it with the lens aimed at me but I can look behind it with a mirror and see how the image is framed. don’t need it… but it’s a great way to know if the position I’m holding the camera is working without having to check the photo every time. Here are a few ways to use mirrors for our self-portraits:

    • Mirrors can also be useful because we can point our camera at it by holding it in the hand facing the mirror. This is often one of the first self-portraits people take. It’s a great one to try!
    • Get close to the mirror (close enough for two… you and your reflection) and have fun with it!
    • Hold the camera at chest level and try shooting in the mirror but the camera fails… it’s a great way to learn about the angles we can shoot!
    • Reflections are fun to take in a bathroom that isn’t your own (like the photos above) and can be a way to give yourself a quick and discreet self-portrait during the day!

broom5Apps & FiltersAs you may have noticed, many of these sample photos were taken with the same filter! The last tip I have for you is to discover the different Apps & Filters that work best for you and your bathroom light! My favorite for this purpose is Hipstamatic. There’s something about some of their film/lens combinations that seem to work well with bathroom photos! The challenge with Hipstamatic is that it actually doesn’t work with your front-facing camera! So you have to go to your old school and take a self-portrait without looking at the screen. Be sure to try the trick I mentioned about using the mirror to see what’s in the viewfinder! So, if you’ve tried taking a self-portrait in the bathroom with your favorite filter for outdoor photos and it makes everything look too dark or just hasn’t inspired you… well, the fun is about to begin. head because you might discover finding a new favorite app or filter for your bathroom photos! You can also try using the basic camera in your phone (or maybe you’re using a DSLR) and experiment with the image processing afterwards. I often find that the photos that we may not be able to draw inspiration from are often the perfect ones to really experiment with and turn into a work of art through the App or by playing around. in Picmonkey! * Do you have any questions? Please don’t hesitate to leave a comment and ask! * Also… if indoor self-portraits work for you right now, try these out!
