how to turn a hoodie into a zip up
inside: Check out this fun sewing trick to add a zipper to a sweater. Now that everyone loves a pullover hoodie, hack your favorite hoodie by adding a zipper.My oldest loves hoodies and my middle can’t stand anything flying over his head. This doesn’t work well for my hands down! I need my brother’s sweatshirt kid and I’ve been working on this zipper hack for a while. It takes a bit of practice, but today I’m going to share my tutorial on how to add a zipper to a sweater.
Hoodie Hack – Zipper
The hard part of this trick is the top of the zipper where it meets the hood. I “think” I finally found a good method, but please let me know if you have suggestions, problems, or need help! You don’t have a shirt to hack? Here are some hoodie sewing patterns you can make:
- Women jacket
- Children’s hoodie Raglan Zip
- Hack oversized sweater
This is the shirt that I will hack in today’s tutorial.
How to thread a zipper on a sweatshirt
Munition:
- Separation Zippers {this pack of 10 is a great deal!!}
- CLIPS { SO much easier than pinning !! }
- The hoodie you want to hack
- A scrap of sweater or other thicker fabric fits.
I found this fleece sweater scrap to match my shirt pretty well. You can use any fabric for this, just remember if going to be at the neck should be something comfortable.Read more: how to remove latex paint from vinyl sidingMark and cut the center of the shirt. My son sometimes complains that cutting really ruins his pockets {they’re so small} but he won’t wear it as a pullover, so I say good luck {haha}
With the right side of the zipper facing down, line the edge of the zipper with the other left edge of the top. Clamp in place. The bottom of the zipper should line up with the bottom of the shirt and we’ll cut the top later.Cut the shredded sweater fabric into 2 x 3 . Fold the long sides together, then with the raw edges facing in and wrapping up, wrap the end of the zipper where the raw cut edge meets the hood. Roll the zipper and fabric to the center {this will finish the rough edges}. Fold the other side of the fabric button up.Fold the tab towards the center. Make sure that the raw edge of the zipper extends UP past the cut edge of the hoodie and is curved enough to complete the raw edge. It’s hard to put into words, but I took a bunch of photos, so hopefully these will help fill in any gaps in my explanation. Trim the top of the fabric zipper slightly if needed.
Sew with leg zipper from top to bottom. Be sure to catch all the raw edges of the zipper end when sewing. Separate the zipper before sewing. Make sure the bottom and top lines are up when zipping.
Sew the top of the zipper button at the neckline. I made small boxes. This keeps the fabric from turning upside down and keeps all the layers in place. Also, sew top to bottom edge of both zipper edges to hold it all in place and keep it folded. My boxes are not perfect! I should probably have chosen the right side and made it a little smaller, but it’s for a 9 year old so I hardly want it to be perfect {haha} I just sewed the top with a straight stitch for both parts and it worked. use a heavy needle.Now you can wear the sweatshirt you’ve always wanted, but don’t like to pull over your head!
